Coyle denies pitch rumours

Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle insists his pre-match ritual of examining turf in the six-yard box before games is nothing new.
The Reebok tactician was spotted by television cameras before Sunday's 2-1 win over Blackburn kneeling in the goals at both ends.
It had been suggested the former Burnley boss had buried something under the goal line to bring his side good luck - something he refutes.
However, Coyle was simply examining the turf in the goalmouth to see what the effects of the recent cold snap were.
"I always do the same thing, three or four hours before a game, and walk the length of the pitch," Coyle told The Bolton News.
"I checked the turf in the goalmouth because it had been frosty just recently. So I'm not sure why people thought I'd buried something.
"Maybe there's some buried treasure there? I'd better go back and check."

Holden the hero for Bolton

Man of the match: Stuart Holden. The American capped a superb all-round display with a brilliant winning goal.
Goal of the match: Holden takes the honour with a stunning volley from Kevin Davies' knock-down which flew past Rovers keeper Paul Robinson.
Change of the match: Owen Coyle was forced to make a tactical switch following Mark Davies' sending off and he brought on Fabrice Muamba who went on to open the scoring.
Moment of the match: Mark Davies was sent off for Bolton, but instead of damaging the Trotters it seemed to galvanise the home side as they went on to win the game.
Talking point: Can Bolton secure a place in Europe this season? Should Blackburn spend big in January to bolster their squad?
SKY BET ODDS
Blackburn are 12/1 to be relegated this season following their defeat to Bolton. Bet now.
Stuart Holden's late goal earned 10-man Bolton a battling 2-1 win over Blackburn in their local derby at the Reebok Stadium to send them back into the top six.
American midfielder Holden hit the winner two minutes from time just seconds after Blackburn substitute Mame Diouf had cancelled out Fabrice Muamba's opener for Bolton.
After a dour first half the game burst into life when Mark Davies was sent off for a second bookable offence after catching Blackburn midfielder Phil Jones with his elbow.
Despite the numerical disadvantage Bolton broke the deadlock on 65 minutes when Muamba cut inside Ryan Nelsen and drilled his shot low past Paul Robinson.
Blackburn looked to have salvaged a point when Jason Roberts fed Diouf inside the box and the on-loan Manchester United man lifted the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen on 87 minutes
But Holden had the last word when he volleyed home Kevin Davies' knock-down just a minute later to send the home fans into raptures.
It was a dramatic way for Coyle's men to bounce back after last week's disappointing loss at Manchester City, with Holden the only change in favour of Muamba, who started on the bench.
Rovers, on a high after their win over Wolves, fashioned the first chance in the opening minute with Roberts flicking a cross by El-Hadji Diouf just wide.
But Coyle's men soon grew into the occasion and began to look the better side, with Mark Davies drilling a low shot at Robinson and Morten Gamst Pedersen's cross almost finding Martin Olsson.
Petrov turned provider to fire in a superb low cross in the 10th minute, with the stretching Kevin Davies almost connecting on the edge of the six-yard box.
A mazy run from the impressive Petrov ended in a low shot the wrong side of Robinson's right-hand post in the 21st minute as Bolton continued to press.
An incisive through ball by Bolton defender Paul Robinson sent Johan Elmander tearing clear down the right flank only for him to be tripped by Jones, who was booked by referee Mark Clattenburg.
But Blackburn improved as the half went on. Roberts almost raced clear on to a Jones through ball after 34 minutes but was pulled down by Zat Knight, who was fortunate to escape with a booking.
Then Pedersen's dangerous free-kick was parried by Jussi Jaaskelainen into the path of Gael Givet, who miscued horribly off target from the corner of the six-yard box.
Tempers began to fray in a ragged start to the second half after Gary Cahill had seen a shot blocked at point-blank range and former England goalkeeper Robinson parried well from Holden.
Davies was issued a second yellow card by Clattenburg for his apparent elbow on Jones, then Martin Olsson and Elmander were booked in quick succession.
Rovers sought to exploit their extra man advantage with Christopher Samba's header booted off the line by Kevin Davies, and Givet firing the rebound high and wide.
Bolton grabbed the lead out of nowhere when substitute Muamba - with virtually his first touch of the match - finished superbly when afforded too much space on the right.
Rovers' push for an equaliser left space at the back and Kevin Davies almost capitalised when he directed a Petrov cross just wide in the 75th minute.
Rovers did grab their equaliser three minutes from time when a superb touch by Roberts played in Mame Biram Diouf to squirt a left-footed effort past Jaaskelainen.
But the home side grabbed the points straight after the restart when striker Davies headed a long ball into the path of Holden, who controlled superbly before lashing his winner past Robinson.

Holden worry for Bolton

Bolton Wanderers could again be without midfielder Stuart Holden for Saturday's Premier League game at Manchester City.
Holden missed last week's 2-2 draw with Blackpool due to a thigh strain and has yet to fully recover from the problem.
He is still to return to training and Trotters boss Owen Coyle admits the USA international is a major concern for Saturday's trip to the City of Manchester Stadium.
Coyle said: "Stuart Holden missed out last week - he has been very influential for us.
"He hasn't trained up to this point so we will give him the next couple of days to see where he is at and take it from there."
Holden had started every game in the Premier League this season prior to the Blackpool draw and has been a key figure in Bolton sitting in sixth in the table.
He was replaced in the team against Blackpool by Mark Davies, who staked his claim for a regular starting role by scoring a late equaliser.

Basham facing lengthy absence

Blackpool midfielder Chris Basham has broken his leg and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Ian Holloway has confirmed.
The 22-year-old, who has made just three first-team appearances this term, sustained the injury playing for the Pool reserves last week.
Manager Holloway has revealed the youngster, who arrived at Bloomfield Road from Bolton in the summer, will be out for a while, but could return before the end of the season.
Holloway said: "It is not good news for him but it is not career-threatening.
"It is another setback. He is a young lad I paid a lot of money for in the summer and I was working him in two or three different positions.
"But there is a chance he could be back before the end of the season."

Rodrigo happy at Reebok

Teenage winger Rodrigo claims he is happy at Bolton despite limited first-team opportunities.
The Spain U21 international has largely been restricted to a place on the bench since joining the Trotters on loan from Benfica over the summer.
He has, however, impressed of late as a substitute and played a part in both of Bolton's goals in Saturday's dramatic 2-2 draw with Blackpool.
The Brazil-born playmaker admits it has taken him some time to get used to the freezing conditions in the North West, with the country in the midst of a cold snap, but is pleased with the way he is settling in to Premier League life.
"Last year was cold in Madrid and yesterday it snowed," the 19-year-old told The Bolton News.
"For me, the weather isn't strange at all. There's no problem training.
"I'm very grateful to have helped my team-mates out, for me that's the best thing.
"I'm very happy here. I like playing the games, all players want to play as much as possible. I need to be patient if I want to play more in the next few games."
Rodrigo has only made one start under manager Owen Coyle so far this season but hopes his showing against Blackpool will earn him a more regular role.
He admits the Trotters need to improve on their performance against the Seasiders, but the club can have few complaints at present as they continue to ride high in the Premier League table.
"It was a great result because it looked like we had lost but it shows the squad have confidence," Rodrigo said on the Seasiders stalemate, which was achieved after falling two goals behind.
"They scored two goals from corners, so we need to train on that so we can be better in the next game."

Davies plans Bolton send-off

Bolton Wanderers captain Kevin Davies is hoping he can finish his playing career at the Reebok Stadium.
Davies has been an integral member of the Bolton team since joining from Southampton in 2003 and he recently passed the 300 appearance mark for the club.
His strike partnership with Johan Elmander this season has been a key factor in the Trotters sitting sixth in the table and he was also rewarded with his first England cap in October.
The 33-year-old, who is under contract until 2012, has no complaints with life in Bolton and is eager to see out his playing days with the club.
"Bolton has become home to me now, we're very settled in the area and have some great friends here," Davies told the Bolton News.
"The local people have been amazing for us. I don't think I can recall one instance where we've had any bother.
"The football is as good as it's ever been, and living in the town I get a lot of feedback, and long may that continue.
"In terms of football, I'd like to finish my career at Bolton and then hopefully stay in the game.
"I'm not sure what level it would be at, but right now I'm trying to enjoy this season and next season when my contract takes me to, and then go from there.
"We love the area, and though you can never tell in life, hopefully this will be where we remain."

Coyle calm over Elmander

Owen Coyle insists he is 'relaxed' over the Johan Elmander situation after Bolton chairman Phil Gartside opened talks to try and keep him at the club.
Sweden international Elmander, whose current deal expires in the summer, has been influential for the Trotters so far this season having already scored eight Premier League goals.
The 29-year-old has inevitably attracted interest from other clubs, but manager Coyle is calm over his future.
"If players are playing well it is only natural bigger clubs will cast an eye on them," said Coyle. "That is the nature of football and I am relaxed about it.
"Until those bids come in, it is all hypothetical. When they do we will give them respect and make a decision. I do not get caught up in it too much and beat myself up. Johan knows that.
"If it was a club of a similar size to Bolton I believe he would stay here. If an elite club came in Johan would be crazy not to think about it.
"I have no problems with that. Johan is well within his rights to do what is right for himself and his family. What I will do game by game is try to get the best out of him."
He added: "Phil has had talks with Johan's representative and that will be on-going.
"Johan has been terrific from day one and if they decide they want it to run its course into January, then so be it."

Lee signs new Bolton deal

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Lee Chung-yong has signed a contract extension, manager Owen Coyle has revealed.
The South Korea international has been a mainstay in the Trotters team this season, starting in all of their Premier League fixtures and weighing in with two goals.
The 22-year-old has been in fine form of late, providing two assists in the win at Wolverhampton Wanderers before scoring in last weekend's 5-1 demolition of Newcastle United.
And Coyle has rewarded Lee, who arrived from FC Seoul last summer, with a new deal at the Reebok Stadium.
The White boss said: "We have signed Lee on a contract extension. It is great news for the club that such a talented player will be here for a long time."
Lee, who is now tied to Bolton until 2013, follows in the footsteps of team-mates Fabrice Muamba, Stuart Holden and Danny Ward in signing a contract extension at the Lancashire club.
Coyle, who arrived in January from Burnley, believes the future is looking ever brighter at the club, not least because they sit fifth in the Premier League table ahead of the weekend clash with Blackpool.
He said: "These extensions show we are looking to build a club. I am very forward thinking in trying to improve and help these young players on our journey.
"With the talent he has Lee is getting better day by day and I am thrilled he has signed up.
"What I am wary of is we do not burn him out as he has played two years without a break. He managed to have three weeks off after the World Cup that's all."

Coyle has no need to sell

Owen Coyle has told Sky Sports News that he is under no pressure to part with his top stars in January.
The Bolton boss has seen the likes of Johan Elmander and Gary Cahill linked with exits once the transfer window reopens.
Disappointing financial figures announced by the Trotters have fuelled the speculation, with chairman Phil Gartside admitting that sales may be required.
Coyle, though, insists he has been assured that there will be no need to part with the club's most saleable assets and claims he is more concerned about adding than selling.
"I think it's important that we put this to bed finally," the Scot told Sky Sports News.
"We don't have to sell anyone in January. When the financial results came out they weren't great and no-one is trying to be evasive or trying to pretend otherwise, but I think people need to realise that debt is owed to one man, our owner Eddie Davies.
"I speak to Eddie, like I do the chairman, every week and I'm as comfortable now as I was when I came into the job. They have stressed to me that I don't have to sell anybody.
"In a matter of fact, I'm looking to strengthen in January to help the squad we've got. We don't have the greatest numbers but we have quality and I'm looking to add to that because we want to build a team and take the club on."
Bolton have already announced that they intend to open talks with Elmander regarding a contract extension and Coyle admits he is keen to see the Swedish striker stay.
"I think everyone is aware that Johan's contract expires at the end of the season, but we will continue to have dialogue," he said.
"I'm very comfortable with the situation because of the relationship I have with Johan, we speak every day.
"He's well within his rights to play it out however he wants, I have no problem with that, but what I do know, and he knows as well, is that he has a manager who believes in him and he is probably enjoying his football more than he ever has done.
"He's the only one who can answer that question, but it's fair to say we would love him to stay at the football club. In time we will see if that is the case."

Williamson charged by FA

Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson has been charged with violent conduct following an incident involving Bolton Wanderers striker Johan Elmander.
Williamson clashed with Elmander off the ball during the first half of Bolton's 5-1 victory over Newcastle at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday.
The incident was not spotted by referee Howard Webb, but the Football Association has reviewed video footage and opted to charge Williamson.
A Football Association statement said: "Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson has today been charged with violent conduct.
"The charge relates to an incident involving Johan Elmander in his side's fixture with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, November 20.
"Williamson has until 6pm on Tuesday, November 23 to reply to the charge and under the FA's fast-track regulations, may admit the charge and accept a standard three-match suspension."
If Williamson either accepts the charge, or is subsequently found guilty, he will leave the Magpies with a defensive headache.
Fellow centre-half Fabricio Coloccini was sent off against Bolton after elbowing Elmander in the second half and both players could miss Sunday's game against Chelsea.

Trotters plan Elmander talks

Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside will meet Johan Elmander's agent on Wednesday to discuss a new contract for the striker.
Elmander's current deal expires at the end of the season and his sparkling form this term has seen the Swede linked with a move away from the Reebok Stadium.
The 29-year-old's brace in Saturday's 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle took his tally to eight Premier League goals for the campaign and revived suggestions Bolton could sell when the transfer window reopens in January.
However, Gartside has stressed the Trotters do not need to balance the books by cashing in on key players and remains hopeful of persuading Elmander to stay at the club.
"He is out of contract in the summer and we've got to try and re-sign him," Gartside told the Bolton News. "I've got a meeting with his agent on Wednesday just to do that.
"I was asked a question about the January window and I said 'It's always a good time to sell players because if a Champions League team comes in they always pay top bill'. I didn't say we were selling.
"We're not in a position where we have to sell. If someone comes in with a great offer, we will consider it.
"We're in no different position to anyone else. We run a business and if someone comes in with an offer that is attractive to us, then we'll trade. We're not a selling club, we are a trading club.
"We're no different than a Chelsea or a Manchester City - we've got a wealthy owner who loves his football."

Hughton defends Coloccini

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton has defended Fabricio Coloccini following his sending-off against Bolton.
The Argentine was shown a straight red card for an apparent eblow on Bolton striker Johan Elmander during his side's 5-1 defeat at the Reebok Stadium.
Coloccini now faces a three-game ban for the offence, but Hughton insists the defender is not a malicious player.
"No arguments with the red card," said Hughton. "With Coloccini it is worth stating that he is not a malicious player. It was a frustrating afternoon for him. I think Elmander was going to do him for pace. I don't think there is maliciousness in it."
Coloccini could be joined on the sidelines by defensive partner Mike Williamson following his off-the-ball clash with Elmander.
Elmander was left pole-axed after a clash with Williamson in the first half which went unnoticed by referee Howard Webb.
However, Williamson could find himself handed a ban if the FA uses video evidence to look at the incident.
Hughton admits Newcastle need to clean up their act as they already without Joey Barton after his punch on Blackburn's Morten Gamst Pedersen earlier this month.
"It is something we have to be a bit careful about because of the size of the squad," added Hughton.
"It was a big blow to miss Joey in the fashion we did, and now of course we will miss Coloccini presumably for three games.
"It is a big blow for us. We do have a tight squad. Now we will go into more testing times over the Christmas period."

Coyle hails top display

Bolton boss Owen Coyle believed his side had been at their best when beating Newcastle 5-1 to move up to fourth in the table.
Skipper Kevin Davies scored a brace of penalties, Johan Elmander notched twice and Chung yong-Lee was also on the scoresheet as the Trotters ran amok at the Reebok Stadium.
Andy Carroll scored and hit the crossbar for the Magpies, who also had Fabricio Coloccini sent off, but Bolton were good value for their victory.
"Well I think it was (a five-star performance). I felt we started on the front foot, really took the game to Newcastle," Coyle told Sky Sports, adding it was a very valuable three points.
"We knew we were going to have to be at our best but I felt we were today and certainly warranted the three points."
He refused to get drawn on whether referee Howard Webb had got both penalties right, with replays showing the unlucky Jose Enrique had got the ball for the second spot-kick.
"The first one's a clear handball as far as I was concerned, there's a couple of other things that went on in the game that went unnoticed so I'm not going to get drawn on that.
"I'm delighted with the way my players went about it, quality performance, fully deserving the three points.
"There would be nobody (at this game) coming away thinking we didn't deserve to win this and I suggest we had a lot more chances than the ones we've scored with."
But Coyle refused to get carried away, despite Bolton moving up to fourth in the table.
"We're enjoying it at the moment, there's no doubt about that, but we have to continue working hard and that's what brings you rewards in football," he said.

Hughton - We self-destructed

Newcastle boss Chris Hughton believed his side had contributed to their own downfall in the 5-1 loss to Bolton.
Magpies skipper Kevin Nolan missed an early chance before gifting his old club the opener when handballing in the box, with Bolton captain Kevin Davies stepping up to score from the penalty spot.
Goals from Chung Yong-Lee and Johan Elmander either side of half-time put the Trotters firmly in control before Andy Carroll scored to give the Magpies a glimmer of hope.
But Elmander put the issue beyond doubt when out-muscling Fabricio Coloccini and slotting home, before the Newcastle defender was sent off soon afterwards for elbowing the Swede.
Carroll then hit the crossbar before Davies netted an injury-time penalty to complete the rout, although replays showed Jose Enrique had got the ball.
Hughton told Sky Sports: "It was a very difficult day for us. We added to our own problems, certainly in that first-half period.
"We started the game, I thought, very well, coped with the game that they play, very much working off the two front players (Davies and Elmander) but I thought we coped with it very well.
"But we added to our downfall by giving away two very poor goals in that first-half period.
"And then of course, what you have got - particularly here and in the form that they're in - you've got a mountain to climb so we didn't do ourselves any favours today."
Asked if he thought the penalties and sending off against his side had been right, he replied; "Well I thought certainly on the penalty second half - first half yes, Kevin's handballed it and I've got no arguments with that one - the second-half penalty Enrique most definitely plays the ball and I think you'll see that tonight but it didn't seem like it would be our day today.
"But no arguments with most of the decisions, as I say we added to our own downfall.
"We created chances ourselves - that was the shame - that I think if we were able to keep the scoreline down to a reasonable score then we were still very, very much in the game.
"But the game became an open game - of course, when we went down to ten men it was going to be that much more difficult for us and it was a hard afternoon for us."

Davies - We deserved it

Bolton skipper Kevin Davies hailed a fantastic performance after the Trotters beat Newcastle 5-1 to go fourth.
Davies scored the first and last goals from the penalty spot - with a Johan Elmander brace and Chung Yong-Lee goal in between - while Newcastle netted an Andy Carroll consolation.
The win saw Bolton go fourth in the Premier League table and Davies believed the victory was thoroughly deserved.
He told Sky Sports: "It's going well - I think the Reebok is the place to be for entertainment at the minute.
"We played a very good Newcastle side who have gone away and beat Arsenal so I think it's a fantastic performance from the boys and a great win for us."
Davies coolly slotted both his penalties into the bottom corner and said he is confident in such a pressured situation.
"I've taken a few now and feel a lot more confident with it," he said.
The skipper believed the on-fire Trotters could have scored even more than the five goals they posted.
He added: "I thought it was a good game, played in the right way. Like I said, we played some great football at times and I think it was a fair result.
"I'm not over-complimenting the result - I felt we deserved the five goals and probably could have scored a few more."

Five-star Trotters go fourth

Man of the match: Johan Elmander. Scored twice and a goal assist from the big Swede who was on fire at the Reebok. He is full of confidence and looking to score at every opportunity.
Goal of the match: Elmander's first. Chung-yong Lee fed the ball to Kevin Davies who made a simple pass to Elmander who rounded the keeper and slotted home. Simple, incisive passing and a great finish.
Attempt of the match: Matt Taylor's attempt from 30 yards out from a free-kick, which hit the crossbar before Lee eventually slotted home for the second Bolton goal.
Save of the match: Jussi Jaaskelainen made a good point-blank save from Shola Ameobi early on, although the striker then was given offside.
Moment of the match: Elmander's goal just after the break. Newcastle were two down at the time but could have come back into it with a goal but Elmander's effort made it too big a mountain to climb.
Talking point: Elmander was felled by Mike Williamson in the first period. He claimed a head butt but referee Howard Webb gave no punishment. Newcastle were unlucky for the late Davies penalty when replays showed Jose Enrique had got the ball.
Braces from Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies saw Bolton Wanderers beat Newcastle United 5-1 and move fourth in the table.
Owen Coyle's side went ahead when Davies scored from the spot in the 18th minute after ex-Bolton player Kevin Nolan had handled in the box.
Soon afterwards, Elmander went down under an off-the-ball incident with Mike Williamson but the Newcastle player received no punishment.
Chung-yong Lee then doubled Bolton's advantage on 39 minutes after Matt Taylor's free-kick struck the crossbar and Danny Simpson's clearance hit Elmander, sending the ball into Lee's path to slot home.
Elmander then added a third five minutes after the restart after rounding Tim Krul following Davies' incisive short pass.
But Andy Carroll gave Newcastle hope two minutes later when latching onto the ball and scoring after Stuart Holden had tackled Shola Ameobi.
Elmander put the issue beyond doubt, however, when out-muscling Fabricio Coloccini and slotting home on 72 minutes, before the Newcastle defender was sent off four minutes later for elbowing the Swede.
Carroll then hit the crossbar before Davies netted an injury-time penalty to complete the rout.
Nolan's first appearance at the Reebok Stadium since his £4million move to Newcastle in January last year had started with a rousing reception from the home fans but quickly turned sour as Chris Hughton's men slid to a big defeat.
But the Newcastle skipper could have given his side a dream start when he seized on a mistake by Paul Robinson soon after kick-off and cut into the box from the right before blazing a fine chance high and wide.
Carroll then crossed from the left to Ameobi at the far post who shot and drew a save from Jussi Jaaskelainen but referee Howard Webb had blown for offside.
Bolton began to get a grip on the game and had their first chance in the 15th minute when Lee crossed from the right and almost found Fabrice Muamba in front of goal.
Nolan's return got worse three minutes later when he handled an attempted cross by Lee in the box and Webb pointed to the spot, Davies striking low to Krul's left to give Bolton the lead.
With Bolton now well on top, Davies tried a left-foot snap-shot which Krul held at the second attempt, then he almost shrugged off the attention of three defenders to create a 27th minute chance before Simpson intervened.
The visitors fashioned a rare chance in the 31st minute when Jose Enrique got round the back of the Bolton defence and dribbled a deep cross which was missed in the box by Carroll, making a sluggish return from midweek England duty.
Williamson's foul on Elmander led to Bolton's second in the 39th minute. Taylor slammed his free-kick against the bar and as Newcastle blundered their attempts to clear, Simpson's kick hit Elmander, with the ball rebounding to Lee who fired low past Krul.
Lee came close to a second when he just failed to connect with a Davies cross, but Newcastle could have reduced the deficit in the last minute of the half when Carroll just missed a Danny Guthrie cross.
Bolton could have gone further ahead within two minutes of the restart when Taylor was given an alarming amount of space on the left but his cross towards the unmarked Davies was cut out by Enrique.
And the home side did make it three in the 50th minute when Lee fed Davies, whose superb short pass sent Elmander clear to coolly round Krul and convert his seventh goal of the season.
Newcastle reduced the deficit out of nowhere just two minutes later when Holden tackled Ameobi on the edge of the box and the ball fell to Carroll, who fired low to Jaaskelainen's left to give his side a glimmer of hope.
As the game continued to open up, Gary Cahill rammed a left-foot shot just wide from long range and the Magpies fired another warning with Jonas Gutierrez's left-wing cross just missing Nolan and the diving Carroll in the box.
Nolan was booked for barging Elmander as the pair chased a loose ball on the edge of the box before Taylor slammed the resulting free-kick into the wall as Coyle's men pushed for a match-winning fourth.
It duly arrived in the 72nd minute when Elmander was first to a long ball up-field from Jaaskelainen, shrugging off Coloccini before sliding the ball under the advancing Krul.
Things got worse for Newcastle in the 76th minute when Coloccini elbowed Elmander as they battled for possession down the right flank, and the full-back was red-carded by referee Webb.
Williamson slammed a shot over the bar on 85 minutes and Ivan Klasnic came close for Bolton before Davies rounded off the rout with a second spot-kick in injury-time, although replays showed the unlucky Enrique had got the ball.

Cahill interest heats up

Chelsea are thought to have joined the hunt for Bolton defender Gary Cahill, with the Blues ready to launch a January raid.

Chelsea have been hit with an injury crisis in the heart of their defence with both John Terry and Alex expected to be sidelined for some time.
The Stamford Bridge side are now thought to have turned their attentions to Cahill, who could be available in January after chairman Phil Gartside hinted the club's top players could be sold in the transfer window as the Wanderers can demand a bigger fee than they would be able to in the summer.
Cahill has previously been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United and Inter Milan and if Chelsea do step up their interest in the talented centre-half it could spark a bidding war.
Arsenal are said to be weighing up a £12million move for the former Aston Villa defender in January, although Bolton are unlikely to allow the 24-year-old to leave for less than £15million.
However, if Terry and Alex recover before the January transfer window opens Chelsea may opt not to make a move for Cahill, while they have also been linked with Benfica's David Luiz.
Bolton boss Owen Coyle has stressed his desire to hold onto Cahill and the player himself has stated he is happy to remain at the Reebok for the time being, although he is keen to test himself at a bigger club in the future.
If Cahill is sold in January Coyle will have to seek a replacement, with Zat Knight the club's only other recognised centre-half as Andy O'Brien is currently on loan at Leeds and it appears as if he no longer figures in Coyle's plans.

Boss reveals striker's England hope

Boton boss Owen Coyle claims Kevin Davies is not bitter about being overlooked for the latest England squad that faced France.

The 33-year-old became his country's oldest debutant last month when he came off the bench in their Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro and gave a good account of himself.
Davies has since impressed again for his club, most notably in front of the England management in the Trotters' 4-2 victory over Spurs, when he scored twice and setup another.
Newcastle striker Andy Carroll and Cardiff's Championship hitman Jay Bothroyd were the new front players in the squad for last night's game, with Carroll starting and Bothroyd getting his chance as a late substitute, but it would appear the door is still open for the Wanderers skipper.
Coyle said: "Kevin is comfortable with it.
"Franco Baldini (England general manager) rang him last Saturday night and explained that he did well, that they knew how well he is doing and that he is very much in their thoughts for further down the line."

Bolton striker Danny Ward will return to complete his loan spell at Coventry soon after recovering from a hernia problem.

Ward joined the Championship side for a three month loan spell earlier in the season but suffered a hernia injury that required surgery and returned to the Reebok to recover.
However, Coventry City manager Aidy Boothroyd has now confirmed he hopes to have Ward back at the Ricoh Arena soon.
He told the Coventry Telegraph: "We are hoping to get him back soon. I understand he is doing some straight line running up at Bolton as he recovers."
It is unclear yet as to whether the young striker will extend his loan stay at Coventry or remain until his initial loan spell was set to end in December.
It appears unlikely Ward will be able to force his way into the Wanderers side at the moment as Johan Elmander, Kevin Davies and Ivan Klasnic have impressed in recent weeks, while Rodrigo Moreno and Robbie Blake are also competing for a place in the Bolton side, and boss Owen Coyle is keen for the youngster to gain first team experience in the Championship to aid his development.
Ward enjoyed a productive loan-spell with Swindon Town last season and helped the League One side reach the play-off final, where they were beaten by Millwall.

Coyle eyes January signings

Owen Coyle hopes Bolton will provide the funds for a transfer spree in January as he hopes to cement their place in the top six.
Coyle has transformed the fortunes of the Trotters this term and taken them up to fifth, ahead of some of the division's more illustrious names.
This feat has been achieved on limited funds and after 13 games his side already have more points than his predecessor Gary Megson's achieved in 19 matches.
Bolton are currently £93 million in debt - the majority being owed to owner Eddie Davies - but Coyle feels his side need three new signings to continue their momentum.
"I would like to freshen things up," he told the Daily Mirror.
"I have got my eye on a couple of players. Finance will dictate if we can do it or not.
"Our scouts have been out and about around the world and I could reel off a few names but that would only alert our rivals.
"I would love to be able to bring some in."
With one of the smallest squads in the league, Coyle knows that a combination of injuries and suspensions could easily derail their promising start.
"We are operating with 19 or 20 players and I believe in all of them. But if we are able to add one or two we would like to do it.
"When I first came we brought in Stuart Holden n on a free. We signed Vladimir Weiss and we brought in an unbelievable talent in Jack Wilshere."
