The Black Cats skipper was a key figure in their shock 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
And Cattermole feels it came about because Sunderland went into the game believing they could beat the Premier League champions.
"We said before the game we couldn't sit back and let Chelsea get comfortable on the ball," said Cattermole.
"We wanted to get right in their faces and make it hard for them straight from the kick-off.
"We went there full of belief and carried out exactly what we wanted to do. It was amazing."
