Rooney has been sidelined for a month with an ankle problem but is said to be in contention to make his comeback versus Wigan this weekend.
Prior to his time spent recovering from the injury, the striker was struggling for form, managing just one league goal this season.
Ferdinand, though, is backing Rooney to recapture the form he demonstrated last campaign as he netted 26 Premier League goals.
He said: "Hopefully Wazza will come back and be the Wazza we remember. That is what everyone is hoping.
"He has gone away and worked really hard physically.
"We all hope he comes back in great shape and ready to play for Manchester United and England in the future.
"A fit Rooney is one of the best players in the world."
