Mancini - City's worst showing

Roberto Mancini labelled Manchester City's performance in defeat to Wolves as their worst of the season.
The Italian admitted their opponents were worthy of the win, but blasted his players for becoming complacent after taking an early lead.
City were ahead on 23 minutes when Emmanuel Adebayor scored from the spot after Richard Stearman had brought down David Silva.
The breakthrough was no less than the visitors deserved after a dominant opening but their showing dipped drastically thereafter and Wolves seized advantage.
Nenad Milijas and David Edwards provided the goals which handed relegation candidates Wolves their first win in eight and Mancini revealed he has yet to piece together exactly what went wrong.
"We only played for the first 25 minutes," said Mancini, who handed Mario Balotelli a disappointing first Premier League start at Molineux.
"We played very well during that period of the game and had four or five chances to score.
"But then we stopped playing and Wolves deserved to win this game. It was the worst game we have played.
"I don't know why this happened but we must regroup and understand why this happened.
"Maybe we thought after 20 minutes that it was an easy game. A team can lose but you can't lose like we did - playing like that for 60-70 minutes."
Mancini admitted a hint of doubt about City's title credentials before insisting there are enough fixtures to eat into league leaders Chelsea's eight-point lead over them.
Mancini said: "This was the sort of game you have to win if you want to challenge for the title.
"You must play all games at 115%. I must understand very quickly why this happened.
"But the season is long, we started it very well and there is time to recover."

Pulis - Goal should have stood

Stoke manager Tony Pulis was disappointed his side were not awarded a goal in their 1-0 defeat to Everton.
The Potters were beaten at Goodison Park with Yakubu's strike midway through the second half enough to see off what had been stubborn resistance by the visitors.
It could have been very different however as Tuncay bundled the ball home from close range eight minutes earlier, only to see his effort disallowed by referee Lee Probert for a dubious-looking push on Leighton Baines.
Pulis was frustrated to see another decision go against him, having already spoken of his annoyance at some decisions given against his team this season.
"It's a good goal looking at it and it's just fell on the wrong side for us. If you have a look, Baines is already going down when Tunny puts the ball in the net or when there's contact he's already gone down," he said.
"You need decisions to go for you at both ends of the pitch, they took their opportunity and ended up winning the game 1-0.
"It's a very poor decision again, but we seem to be on the end of it at the moment, we just have to keep going.
"We can't keep bleating about it and you can't blame the referee for the goal they scored, we've got to get on with our jobs and do our jobs properly.
"But it doesn't help if you're not getting a proper decision go your way. If we'd have scored that goal I think we'd have gone on and won that game."
Pulis has faced a tough time of late, with four defeats in a row in all competitions, and a tricky trip to Sunderland in front of them next up.
However he had a degree of sympathy for his side, with the Potters having just completed three games in a week, with three of their last four games coming away from the Britannia Stadium and their only home fixture against Manchester United.
"We've come here with (Jon) Walters, Tuncay, Kenwyne Jones and (Matthew) Etherington, four forwards, and I think we've got a better squad and can compete," he added.
"But we need to keep clean sheets and that's a big thing.
"For me the team has worked really hard, we've had a three-game week. I'm just desperately disappointed that we haven't got the results.
"If you look at the five games with Sunderland coming up, four of them have been away from home, with the home one being against Manchester United, so we knew it was going to be very tough."

Shorey revelling in Baggies life

Defender Nicky Shorey is delighted to have reignited his career at West Brom and insists he never lost faith in his ability.
The full-back moved to The Hawthorns on a permanent basis in the summer after making only four appearances for former club Aston Villa last season.
Shorey had also previously left Villa on loan for Nottingham Forest and Fulham in search of first-team minutes in what was a hugely frustrating period of his career.
And so ahead of Monday's meeting with Blackpool, the 29-year-old, who has two England caps to his name, is pleased to be playing on a regular basis.
.
"This move has been vitally important for my career," Shorey told West Brom's official website. "I really needed it.
"It's the most I've enjoyed my football for a long time. And I'm just glad I'm enjoying playing again.
"Of course, when you're not playing, for whatever reasons - and I won't go into the ins and outs - questions are asked of you by certain people - and even by yourself.
"But I've always believed in my ability and hopefully now I can show what I can do. I'm enjoying that chance."

Grant proud of players

West Ham manager Avram Grant was proud of his players after they slipped to a last-gasp defeat at Arsenal.
The Hammers put in a fantastic defensive display at the Emirates in the Premier League clash with their London rivals but were undone by an 88th minute header from Alex Song which sealed a 1-0 victory for the home side.
It is a result which means West Ham remain bottom of the table, but Grant was taking the positives and praised the fighting spirit from his team.
He told Sky Sports: "I think we played well today. We played against a very good team and I think they only had two chances to score.
"We also did some things on the counter-attack and then they scored in the last moment.
"But I'm very proud of the players after what they did today. They showed a lot of good things, fighting spirit and tactical understanding.
"Unfortunately they scored in the last moment, it happens."
Goalkeeper Robert Green was in top form to produce some impressive stops and keep Arsenal at bay.
Following his World Cup disaster the under-pressure shot-stopper will be delighted to get a good display under his belt, and Grant was happy with the whole backline.
"He is a good keeper, he did a good job today. All the defence did a good job today," he added.
"They closed the spaces well. It is not easy to play against Arsenal and we did do well.
"I don't remember Arsenal not able to create so many chances in a long time, this is because of the whole team.
"We can take a lot of positive things from this game even though we lost.
"I feel that we are doing the right things and everything is getting better and better.
"I'm sure that we can do it (climb off bottom). I think the next month or two months are very important for us because we need some points.
"But if we continue to play like this we will have points."

Premier League round-up

Tottenham protest after referee Mark Clattenburg allows Man Utd's second goal to stand
Chelsea had to come from behind to defeat Blackburn, Arsenal also left it late to beat West Ham and Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur but Manchester City lost to Wolves.
Fulham returned to winning ways by overcoming Wigan, while Everton continued their fine form with a narrow victory over Stoke.
Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea looked in trouble early on at Ewood Park but hit back to prevail 2-1 and maintain their five-point advantage at the top of the table.
Blackburn were rewarded for an enterprising start with the opening goal of the game after 21 minutes, Benjani winning an aerial duel against John Terry to get on the end of an El-Hadji Diouf cross.
But Ancelotti had warned on the eve of the clash that there was still more to come from his Chelsea side and their equaliser before half-time was skilfully constructed, with Didier Drogba heading a Florent Malouda pass down for Nicolas Anelka to provide the finish.
It appeared as though the winning goal might never arrive but the Blues finally broke through six minutes from time when Branislav Ivanovic nodded home following good work by Yuri Zhirkov.
Arsenal kept the pressure on Chelsea courtesy of a 1-0 triumph over bottom club West Ham, although again the outcome was in doubt right until final whistle.
It was a familiar tale for Arsenal supporters in the first half at Emirates Stadium as their team played with panache but lacked end product against a Hammers side showing resilience in defence and an occasional threat of their own in attack.
Samir Nasri then struck the crossbar with a ferocious free-kick after the break, while Theo Walcott was also denied by the foot of the post moments after coming on as a substitute and Andrey Arshavin's appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears following a seemingly innocuous brush with Manuel Da Costa.
Robert Green also played his part with a series of saves before Alex Song popped up at the far post to bundle in a Gael Clichy cross with only two minutes remaining.
Manchester United maintained their pursuit of the leaders with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham, but were aided by a controversial second goal at Old Trafford.
The hosts made the breakthrough just past the half-hour mark when Nani whipped in a free-kick from the right and Nemanja Vidic's run was not tracked as the Red Devils captain guided a header inside the far post.
The second goal came five minutes from the end when Nani side-footed the ball into the net, but before Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes had restarted play from a free-kick.
Manchester City were unable to bounce back from their defeat at home to Arsenal last weekend as they slipped to a 2-1 loss against Wolves at Molineux.
Emmanuel Adebayor, starting up front alongside summer signing Mario Balotelli in the absence of Carlos Tevez, put City ahead from the penalty spot following a foul by Richard Stearman on David Silva.
Wolves drew level on the half-hour mark thanks to a fine strike by Nenad Milijas and then took the lead early in the second half when Dave Edwards scored on the rebound after Kevin Doyle's initial effort had been blocked.
City battled in vain to find a way back into the match but Wolves held firm for their first win since the opening day of the campaign.
A Clint Dempsey double inspired Fulham to only their second Premier League victory of the season as Wigan's recent revival came to a halt with a 2-0 reverse at Craven Cottage.
Dempsey headed in Carlos Salcido's left-wing delivery to give Fulham a well-earned advantage in the 30th minute, before finding the net with a neat shot from Chris Baird's cross just prior to the interval.
Stoke slipped to their third straight defeat as Everton extended their unbeaten run to five games with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.
There was nothing to separate the sides until Yakubu Aiyegbeni smashed home from a tight angle midway through the second half after Tim Cahill had hit the post.

Hodgson targets big haul

Roy Hodgson is looking to bring 'five or six' players to Liverpool in January, including a new striker.
The Reds have endured their worst ever start to a Premier League season this campaign, leaving them languishing in the relegation zone having collected just nine points.
Manager Hodgson hopes to combat his side's poor form by heavily bolstering his squad in the upcoming transfer window, starting with his front line.
"We are going to be very interested in improving our squad in January," Hodgson said in the Daily Star.
"I'm prepared to accept that a number of players we're looking to sign do make five or six - but I don't wish to specify positions other than one is obviously a front player.
"In January we should be really looking to solve one or two situations. We are desperately short of players. Front players.
"Having three front players at the club, and that's if you include Ryan Babel, is nowhere near good enough.
"If Fernando (Torres) isn't playing one week, you have got to get someone in who has got the same level of quality."

Fergie - Gomes to blame

Sir Alex Ferguson felt Heurelho Gomes 'should know better' following Manchester United's disputed second goal in the 2-0 home win over Tottenham Hotspur.
United were leading through captain Nemanja Vidic's first-half header when Nani scored a decisive second for the hosts five minutes from time.
Nani rolled a shot into the net after Spurs keeper Gomes had thrown the ball onto the ground believing a free-kick had been awarded after the United winger had handled in the box.
However, referee Mark Clattenburg was waving play on and allowed the goal to stand after consulting his assistant, much to Spurs' fury.
Ferguson felt Nani should have been awarded a penalty in the build-up to the incident and suggested it was an error from Gomes, rather than a mistake by the officials.
"It was bizarre," said the United manager. "No-one knew at the time what was wrong. One minute the goalkeeper had the ball in his hands and next it's in his net.
"Nani looked back and looked at the referee and the referee said play on, so what can he do but put the ball in the net.
"You can look at the referee and look at the linesmen and blame them, but the goalkeeper should know better. He's an experienced goalkeeper. I thought he made a mess of it.
"I thought it was a penalty first of all and I think Nani felt he handled the ball. But the referee didn't blow for it.
"The referee played on because the goalkeeper took possession of the ball. He then went to take a free-kick thinking it was a foul. He made an error."

Mac optimistic over McFadden

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish is hopeful of striker James McFadden returning from injury before the end of the season.
McFadden was beginning to discover his top form when he suffered cruciate ligament damage in training last month.
It was initially feared that the 27-year-old would be sidelined for at least six months and, by the time he had regained match sharpness, the season would effectively be over.
However, McLeish is now optimistic the Scotland international could make a comeback after Christmas.
"He's progressed very well, but we have to put the reins on him," said McLeish.
"It's a cruciate injury. No matter how players recover from it, they certainly don't recover in two or three months.
"We have to put the brakes on his own passion to get fit again.
"He's doing some light weights, some bench presses, some leg presses. Things like that. One of the physios is working with him every day.
"Will he be back before the end of the season? I think he could be. Stefan Klos made a great recovery at Rangers from the same sort of thing when I was there.
"I think he was back in four or five months and James has shown that kind of progress as well."
He added: "It was a shame it happened when it did because I felt James was going to have a big season and he had just played very well against Liverpool.
"It also hampered our striking situation because the others weren't quite ready to return."
McFadden is out of contract at St Andrews at the end of the season, although the Blues have a two-year option in their favour they can apply.
McLeish said: "I wouldn't think that we would be letting a guy like James McFadden walk out of here free."

Wenger hails 'amazing' Song

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hailed match-winner Alex Song after the dramatic 1-0 win over West Ham.
The Gunners left it till the 88th minute against their London opponents at the Emirates Stadium, after Avram Grant's men had battled valiantly in defence.
Song latched on to a Gael Clichy cross to nod past the excellent Rob Green and make it two goals in two league games.
Wenger told Sky Sports: "He is amazing because he came as a centre-back, becomes a defensive midfielder and now he plays like a striker.
"He has added something to his game. He has good timing to get into the box because in the first half he had two good chances, one on his right foot and one header as well.
"When you get two or three chances in the game as a defensive midfielder that means you have good timing.
"(It was a) fantastic piece of play and Clichy has improved a lot going forward. He is calmer and has a good right foot now as well."
West Ham remain bottom of the Premier League after the defeat but Wenger admits his side were in a real battle.
"It was a battle. It was a battle where on our side we needed to be patient, intelligent and sometimes a bit lucky," he added.
"West Ham defended well. Their keeper as always has a great game against us and at the end of the day our keep-going spirit got us through.
"We didn't make mistakes at the back, we kept a clean sheet and in this kind of game this is the most important."
On the Hammers' plight, he remarked: "You would never guess (they were bottom of the league) if you saw them play today.
"If they keep that spirit and keep going like they did today they will never remain there, they will push up very quickly."
The Gunners now travel to Ukraine to face Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday and Wenger hopes the team can earn qualification to the next stage of the competition.
"We will see a different Shakhtar Donetsk to what we have seen because they will have felt humiliated here and will want to put much more dynamic into their game," he said.
"But there is a good opportunity to qualify and guarantee top of the group. It's a great opportunity for us and we go there trying to win the game."

Five more weeks for Rooney

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expects Wayne Rooney to be out of action for another five weeks with an ankle problem.
Rooney has not played since the 2-2 draw against West Brom on 16th October, when he came on a substitute for the final 20 minutes.
He was then ruled out of the UEFA Champions League clash with Bursaspor a few days later after suffering an injury in training, as talks over his future at the club dominated the headlines.
The striker has therefore already been sidelined for almost a fortnight with an injury that was initially expected to keep him out for just three weeks.
Ferguson admitted on Friday that he would be out for longer and the England striker is now not likely to be back until early December.
"I think Wayne Rooney will be out for another five weeks," said Ferguson.
"He'll have to pick up his fitness again. I would think five weeks should be about right."
If Ferguson's estimation proves correct then Rooney could miss several vital Premier League games as well as United's three remaining Champions League Group C fixtures.

Fergie rules out signings

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he is not planning to sign any new players during the January transfer window.
Manchester United remain five points behind leaders Chelsea in the Premier League table following a 2-0 victory over Tottenham on Saturday.
They are unbeaten this season but there has been plenty of discussion about whether Ferguson might need to strengthen his squad in the New Year.
Wayne Rooney recently questioned the club's ambition and ability to attract the world's top players, before being given reassurances and deciding to sign a new long-term contract.
And Ferguson does not see the need to bring in a single fresh face when the transfer window reopens, with a number of key players set to return to fitness for the second half of the campaign.
"We won't be buying in January, definitely not," Ferguson said in the Independent.
"If you want someone to play in Europe, you are limited right away. There are hundreds of players cup-tied.
"You have five months left of the season, I will have Antonio Valencia back hopefully towards the end of February, which is a new player coming back.
"If Michael Owen gets back, it is another new player coming back. So with the squad I've got, I don't see any reason for us to buy anyone."

Harry - A scandalous decision

Harry Redknapp thought referee Mark Clattenburg 'made a mess' of handling Manchester United's second goal in Tottenham's 2-0 defeat and branded it a 'scandalous' decision.
Spurs were trailing to Nemanja Vidic's first-half header at Old Trafford when Nani put the game beyond doubt by scoring five minutes from time.
However, the goal was shrouded in controversy after Nani rolled the ball into the net while Spurs keeper Heurelho Gomes believed he was preparing to take a free-kick.
After consultation with his assistant, Clattenburg allowed the goal to stand, but Redknapp was unhappy that the goal was not chalked off.
The Spurs boss stated Nani should have been booked for handball and could not understand why Clattenburg had not given the visitors a free-kick.
A seething Redknapp said: "What a farcical way to finish a game. It's a handball, he's deliberately handled it and it should have been a booking.
"Everyone has seen him do it so we think it's a free-kick, it's just the referee that doesn't see it.
"Everyone saw him do it so it's a free-kick. You can't lie on the floor and pull the ball back just because you've got the hump because you didn't get a penalty.
"It was a scandalous decision and the referee has made a mess of it all."
Clattenburg was famously the referee who refused to allow Pedro Mendes' 'goal' against United in 2005 - an incident which saw Roy Carroll claw the ball back into play from well over the goal-line.
Redknapp said he rated Clattenburg as a referee despite what he deemed a catastrophic error, but may still find his incendiary comments scrutinised by the Football Association.
Asked if he had questioned the officials about the decision, he continued: "It's farcical, but what can you do? It's gone now.
"In the end he'll come up with some excuse as to why he didn't see it - he couldn't see, he let play go on - well if he did that he should have been saying to Gomes 'play on, play on'.
"I haven't spoken to the referee, he's not going to change his decision and he's made a mess of it all now anyway.
"They'll go in and come up with a story that will make it all look right, that's what happens."

Aston Villa will be out to make it a magnificent seven against fierce local rivals Birmingham in Sunday's high noon derby showdown at Villa Park.
Villa have enjoyed success in each of their last six meetings with their neighbours and have the opportunity to inflict further misery on Alex McLeish's men this weekend.
But Blues can take heart from their previous half-dozen showdowns, having won four and drawn two Premier League meetings before bragging rights shifted firmly to the Villans.
McLeish saw his side snap their worrying six-game winless run in Premier League action last weekend as they saw off Blackpool 2-0 at St Andrews, before scraping through to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup on penalties against Brentford.
Villa were also made to work hard to book their place in the last eight of the cup in midweek, needing an extra-time winner from Stewart Downing to overcome battling Burnley at Villa Park on Wednesday night.
Gerard Houllier has watched his side suffer something of a dip in form in recent weeks, with just one point garnered from their last three games to leave them only a point ahead of Blues in the standings.
Villa left-back Stephen Warnock will return after suspension, with the former Liverpool man sitting out the win over Burnley after incurring five bookings.
Striker Gabriel Agbonlahor (groin), captain Stiliyan Petrov (knee) and defender Luke Young (hamstring) are injured and midfielder Marc Albrighton is banned.
Houllier hopes striker John Carew will have recovered from the bout of flu which ruled him out against the Clarets.
Birmingham playmaker Alexander Hleb has been declared fit for Sunday's eagerly-anticipated meeting.
The on-loan Barcelona player suffered a knee injury during the home success over Blackpool but is named in McLeish's squad.
Midfielder Michel has shaken off a kick on the shin suffered against Brentford but Cameron Jerome (ankle), Jean Beausejour (knee) and James McFadden (knee) are long-term absentees.
Aston Villa: Friedel, Beye, Collins, Dunne, Warnock, Downing, Reo-Coker, Sidwell, Ireland, Young, Heskey.
Birmingham: Foster, Carr, Johnson, Dann, Ridgewell, Larsson, Ferguson, Hleb, Fahey, O'Connor, Zigic.

McCarthy relieved with win

Mick McCarthy is relieved Wolves have finally been rewarded for their recent performances following a 2-1 win over Manchester City.
David Edwards' second-half strike secured the points for Wolves in what was their first win in eight matches after Nenad Milijas had cancelled out Emmanuel Adebayor's penalty.
McCarthy believes his side have put in adequate performances of late but to no avail, and he sees the creditable win over fourth-placed City as a repayment for their persistence.
"We're all delighted that we've got three points and the fact that we've beaten Manchester City, one of the top four teams, makes it all the better," McCarthy told Sky Sports.
"We've actually been playing okay but City started well, and so they should with the players they've got on show, but the game could've gone any way.
"We've played well at Chelsea and got nothing and we played well at Old Trafford and got nothing and went out of the Carling Cup. So, it's the points that matter [now]."
City took the lead from the spot after Richard Stearman brought down David Silva and McCarthy accepts his defender was at fault but praised the manner in which he reacted to the setback.
McCarthy said: "It's a penalty, it's a mistake by Stears but his reaction was brilliant - I thought he defended brilliantly thereafter.
"It was a matter of keeping calm, we allowed the game to settle so we didn't get punished again."
Winger Matt Jarvis turned in another excellent display to press his chances of an England call-up with national team boss Fabio Capello thought to be impressed.
"He has been excellent. He is giving everyone problems," said McCarthy of Jarvis.
"Last weekend, he gave Ashley Cole as difficult a time as he has had and ran
the two Manchester United full-backs ragged in the week."
Despite the win, Wolves remain in the relegation zone but McCarthy revealed the club are by no means at a stage of panic.
A beaming McCarthy added: "The training ground is fantastic, the club is great, we're all supporting each other - I think that performance has spoken quick elegantly of us."

Big Sam calls for more of same

Sam Allardyce feels Blackburn will be raking in the points if they continue to produce performances like their one against Chelsea.
Rovers took a surprise early lead at Ewood Park through Benjani's headed effort, but were ultimately unable to withstand a fight-back from the Premier League champions as Nicolas Anelka equalised before Branislav Ivanovic grabbed a last-gasp winner.
While disappointed not to take anything from the tight encounter, Allardyce insists Rovers' display is heartening going into their next games.
"If we can continue with that level of performance we should be alright, we should start picking three points up," Allardyce told Sky Sports News.
"It's hard to take at the moment that we've actually lost the game.
"We have to take it on the chin though and for me it's about lifting the players and showing them what a positive performance they gave in all departments today.
"So we have to just take this one today and try not to let it get us down too much."
Benjani put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute after he and Mame Biram Diouf had already come close only to be foiled by Blues goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Allardyce feels they could have drawn first blood before Benjani's strike, adding: "We could have scored before that. Petr Cech made two very, very good saves before we actually scored.
"We deserved to go one-up and one-all at half-time wasn't too bad. But seeing the game out is very important and unfortunately we couldn't do that."
Allardyce lamented a golden opportunity which went begging in the second half when substitute Jason Roberts fired a straight-forward shot wide.
"We had the golden chance from Jason really," he said.
"I think he was very unfortunate it didn't go into the goal as he got Cech to dive the wrong way but just put it wide.
"That's the difference, they go up the other end and finish us off."
Blackburn are still lagging in the bottom half of the standings after Saturday's result, and Allardyce admits strong performances are no use to his side if they do not secure the points to go with them.
"Good performances are OK, but without the points it makes life very difficult when you see where we are in the table," he added.
"You've got to catch up somewhere along the line. We should have been sitting in 13th, 14th place by now but we're lagging behind.
"Performances have suggested we should have got them but we haven't and that's the reality."

Carlo - Anelka goal was key

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti cited Nicola Anelka's equaliser against Blackburn as crucial in securing three points on Saturday.
Rovers went ahead in the first half at Ewood Park as Benjani headed in a surprise opening goal, but Anelka pulled the Blues level before the break to pave the way for Branislav Ivanovic's late winner.
Ancelotti heaped praise on French striker Anelka for turning things around, admitting Rovers' early lead had been justified.
"I think it was the key to this victory," Ancelotti told Sky Sports News of Anelka's goal.
"I think in the first half Blackburn played very well, they deserved to be 1-0 up."
He added: "It was very difficult. To play here is not easy but we took a fantastic result and a fantastic three points."
Jason Roberts came close to grabbing another for Blackburn late in the second half and Ancelotti admits his side were fortunate not to go behind for a second time, adding: "I think we were a little bit lucky."
Chelsea's latest win sees the Premier League champions maintain their five-point lead at the top of the table, and Ancelotti is keen to keep it that way.
"It's important," he added. "It's possible to improve.
"We have to stay focused on our job. There is a good atmosphere now and we want to stay in this condition."

Bassong - Bale staying put

Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong is adamant team-mate Gareth Bale is not going anywhere in the January transfer window.
Bale cemented his star status at Spurs with a stunning hat-trick during their 4-3 UEFA Champions League defeat to Inter Milan in Italy earlier this month.
That display put the Welsh international on the radar of several top clubs in Europe, prompting speculation of a big-money January move for the 21-year-old.
But manager Harry Redknapp has since made it clear Bale is not on the market, and Bassong has reiterated that stance by insisting the winger is staying put.
"He is such a good player and the way he was out there was just amazing," Bassong told The People.
"He's not going to leave though, I'm positive. He's staying with us.
"Everybody was already talking about Gareth Bale before he scored that hat-trick.
"But he has to keep working and I'm sure he is going to be a top, top player."
Tottenham host European champions Inter in the Group A return fixture on Tuesday evening, and Cameroon international Bassong is hoping his side can improve on their display at the San Siro.
Bale's treble compensated for an otherwise dismal night for Spurs, during which goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was sent off after eight minutes to see them go 4-0 down by midway through the first half.
"We started that game so badly and gave three goals away," added Bassong.
"You just cannot accept it when you give two goals away in five minutes.
"The game seems to be a nightmare when you are in that situation but the experience can make the team stronger.
"And from a personal point of view I will definitely learn from it. I am still young and I need to learn from games like that one. It will help me in the future."

Bolton v Liverpool
3.30pm, Sun, Sky Sports HD1, Sky Sports 1 and online with Sky Player
Liverpool will be looking to move out of the relegation zone with a win over Bolton in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Reds picked up a much-needed victory over Blackburn last weekend to slightly ease the pressure on manager Roy Hodgson, but he still has some way to go to prove the doubters wrong.
Three points against Rovers were a long time coming for Liverpool in the league as they had not picked up a win since seeing off the challenge of West Brom back in August.
However, it could provide the spark needed for a concerted push up the table after a woeful start to the campaign.
The Reds have only managed nine points from nine games so far but with the bottom half so tight, a victory at the Reebok would see them jump a number of places.
Bolton, though, will prove a tough nut to crack as Owen Coyle's Trotters have not lost in the top flight since their trip to Arsenal in September.
Five games later and Wanderers find themselves looking good in eighth position - three points this weekend could even propel them to fifth.
Liverpool have only scored two goals on their travels this season, both coming at Manchester United, but they did do the double over Bolton last term.
Indeed, the Reds have an excellent record against their weekend opponents and have emerged victorious in the last seven league meetings between the two sides.
Trotters striker Ivan Klasnic comes into consideration despite off-field incidents over the past few days.
Boss Coyle has confirmed Klasnic, suspended for the 1-1 draw at Wigan last weekend, is available despite currently being on bail following his arrest on suspicion of rape earlier this week.
Coyle has also confirmed defender Andy O'Brien is to join Championship side Leeds on a month-long loan as he completes his return to fitness after a recent hamstring injury.
With Joey O'Brien, Ricardo Gardner, Jlloyd Samuel and Sean Davis all still sidelined with long-term injuries, Coyle has a settled squad to choose from.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will again be without Dirk Kuyt but the Dutch forward is making encouraging progress in his recovery from an ankle problem.
Kuyt was expected to be sidelined for a month after sustaining the injury on international duty a fortnight ago but could now be back to face Chelsea a week on Sunday.
Full-back Glen Johnson has an outside chance of returning after a thigh injury.
Striker Fernando Torres was on target against Blackburn last weekend and boss Hodgson believes he is beginning to return to form.
Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Robinson, Steinsson, Cahill, Knight, Muamba, Lee, Holden, Petrov, Elmander, Davies
Liverpool: Reina, Carragher, Konchesky, Kyrgiakos, Skrtel, Lucas, Meireles, Gerrard, Maxi, Cole, Torres

Premier League preview

Expect goose bumps when Newcastle United do battle with Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park, live on .
Elsewhere, Aston Villa play out the Second City derby against Birmingham, Blackburn Rovers welcome champions Chelsea to Ewood Park, Arsenal host bottom-of-the-table West Ham United, Manchester United lock horns with Tottenham Hotspur while Liverpool make the short trip to Bolton Wanderers.
In a week when Newcastle boss Chris Hughton's future at the club was assured, the Magpies aim to make it back-to-back top-flight victories after they came from a goal down to win at Upton Park last weekend when they meet Sunderland on Sunday lunchtime. Newcastle followed up that result with an exit from the Carling Cup versus Arsenal in midweek. But they boast a decent record versus their North East foes Sunderland, who have only won one of the last 11 Premier League matches against the Magpies. That said, the Black Cats head into the fixture in encouraging form, having gone seven games unbeaten, although they sit just a point above their opponents.
On the same day another derby takes place as Aston Villa face Midlands rivals Birmingham City at midday. Gerard Houllier's Villa currently lie in mid-table having won just one of their previous six league outings, although they did advance to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup on Wednesday, albeit in extra-time versus Burnley. Worryingly for Villa though, the side have gone 254 minutes without a Premier League goal. Birmingham, meanwhile, notched a much-welcome success last weekend when they triumphed for just the second time this season, and a scalp at Villa Park would take them above their foes.
Finally on Sunday, Liverpool will be eager to prove they have turned a corner when the club tackle Bolton Wanderers, live on Sky Sports HD1. The Reds claimed just their second win of the term after they beat Blackburn at home last Sunday. That result, however, was not enough to lift them out of the drop zone. A victory against Bolton, though, should be enough to see them rise away from the wrong end of the division. Bolton currently occupy eighth spot, three points above their weekend opponents. And the Trotters are without defeat in five league matches, although four of those games have ended in stalemates.
On Saturday, pace-setters Chelsea head to the North West to meet Blackburn in one of five 3pm kick-offs. The Blues boast a five-point lead at the summit after their closest rivals Manchester City were beaten by now-second-placed Arsenal. One defeat and a draw aside, Chelsea's defence of their title has been ominous, with the club scoring 25 times and conceding just twice. And Blackburn have scored just one goal in total in their last eight Premier League games against Chelsea. Furthermore, Rovers are only spared a place out of the bottom three on goal difference, with one success mustered since an opening day victory.
Arsenal will be hopeful of a slip-up from Chelsea as they look to narrow the gap between them and the leaders following a fine result at Eastlands last Sunday. The Gunners' victory at big-spending City was a major fillip for the club as they made it successive wins following a dip in form. Their opponents West Ham, meanwhile, have mustered just six points from their opening nine fixtures while their slump at home to Newcastle put pressure back on manager Avram Grant, who had seen his men go four games unbeaten. And the omens are not great for the Hammers, who have failed to score in five of their last six Premier League matches with Arsenal.
On Saturday evening, Manchester United face Tottenham in a mouth-watering encounter at Old Trafford. Attention will likely focus on the Red Devils' Mexican striker Javier Hernandez following his fine form of late that has proved there arguably is life with or without Wayne Rooney. Hernandez's brace at Stoke sees United in third spot, and the last remaining unbeaten side in the top flight. Spurs trail United, whom they have not beaten in the league at Old Trafford in 21 years, by two points after their 1-1 draw versus Everton, while manager Harry Redknapp will strive to ensure his players fully focus on their trip to the Theatre of Dreams, and not Tuesday's UEFA Champions League tie versus Inter Milan.
Manchester City travel to Molineux as they go head-to-head with Wolverhampton Wanderers looking to bounce back. City manager Roberto Mancini, who is without key striker Carlos Tevez, will have taken heart from his team's performance with 10 men against Arsenal, but ultimately that loss saw them miss out on the chance to send out a loud and clear title message. They will, however, be expected to respond against struggling Wolves, who lie second from bottom in the table. Mick McCarthy's charges are without a win since the opening day of the campaign, but they did perform very well at Stamford Bridge last weekend, with only a lack of a clinical touch denying them a shock result.
Everton appear to be over their poor beginning to the season with the club having garnered eight points from a possible 12. The Toffees are next in action against Stoke City, who are seeking to halt a run of two straight losses. Defensive solidity has arguably been key to Everton's improvement, with only one goal conceded in their last four Premier League games. Goals, though, have been at a premium, with just one averaged per game. Stoke, meanwhile, have struggled on the road this term, mustering just the one three-point haul thus far.
Lastly, Fulham take on Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium. Mark Hughes' men have slipped down the standings after failing to add to their one three-point haul achieved thus far. Indeed, the Cottagers are currently five matches without a victory, with just goal difference keeping them out of the relegation places. Furthermore, Fulham have won only three of their last 20 Premier League games. The Latics have improved of late, suffering just one loss in their previous seven top-flight fixtures. Indeed, Wigan are unbeaten in their last four league games, their best run since February 2009.

Roy welcomes Henry statement

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has welcomed new owner John Henry's statement that he will not be selling any players in the January transfer window and will instead attempt to strengthen.
Key men Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina have both been linked with moves away from Anfield in the New Year, with Manchester United linked with the latter as the replacement for Edwin van der Sar.
But Hodgson, who has been in regular contact with the New England Sports Ventures group, led by Henry and co-owner Tom Werner, is not under pressure to sell players, although he admits things could have been different had controversial former co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett been in charge.
"The statements were totally self-explanatory and in line with everything John and Tom have told me all along," Hodgson said.
"It is very much in line with our aims for the club.
"One of our aims for the club is to rebuild and restructure and get much stronger. The way we hope to do that is keeping our strong base of top players and adding more players to it.
"There have never been any discussions of the need to sell or get rid of players. All the talk has been of how we are going to make the team stronger.
"It is a very different situation to the one I found myself in at the beginning. There was talk then of staving off administration and having to let players go.
"But the new owners coming in has completely changed the face of things and, as far as we are concerned, their statement is perfect. It is just what everyone wants to hear."

Young reassures Villa fans

Ashley Young insists he is not thinking of leaving Aston Villa - despite putting contract talks on hold.
Young has 18 months left on his current deal and new Villa chief Gerard Houllier had stated that fresh terms were close to being concluded, only for the player to then say he will not agree anything until the summer at the earliest.
His refusal to discuss terms led to speculation over his future, with some believing he will follow Gareth Barry and James Milner out of the door, but the 25-year-old has reassured fans he is not looking to leave.
Speaking ahead of this Sunday's derby with Birmingham, Young told The Sun: "There's nothing about me departing.
"All I'm doing is concentrating on my football. I don't want to be distracted by anything else.
"I've not said I'm leaving and I'm not taking my focus off football.
"They don't need to worry about anything with me."
He added: "I'm delighted with how everything is going, my concentration is 100 per cent on football.
"The fans have been brilliant since I've been here, always singing my name.
"Fingers crossed, come Sunday, I can go out there and repay them big-time in the derby.
"I don't think they are a selling club. GB and Milly have left but players will leave every club - you just carry on.
"I'm concentrating 100 per cent on Villa, I'm not thinking about moving."
Young scored two goals in the 5-1 victory over the Blues in 2008 but would put a win before scoring this time.
He added: "I'd take a win, whether I score or not. If we play well and get three points, that's the main thing in derby games.
"It's always going to be a tough game as it's the derby and there's a hostile atmosphere whenever you play Blues.
"But we are concentrating on ourselves and making sure we do our job right - if we do that we should win."
Young has been playing in a new position this term - just off the main striker rather than out wide - although he was back on the wing for England in the goalless stalemate against Montenegro.
He added: "I'm delighted with how things have gone with Villa and England and I need to keep working hard.
"I enjoy playing in the new position, it gives me more freedom and fingers crossed I can keep playing well for Villa and impressing the manager.
"I wish it was as simple as being told to roam and be free but it's for me to link the strikers and the widemen and the defensive side of it as well.
"I've played up front in the past and I didn't realise how much running there was to do up there."
Young is full of praise for new boss Houllier, believing Villa can push for a UEFA Champions League spot after finishing sixth in the last three seasons.
He added: "The gaffer's been fantastic. The club can keep progressing and pushing for that Champions League spot."

Grant eyes Wenger blueprint

West Ham manager Avram Grant believes he can achieve what Arsene Wenger has done at Arsenal.
The Hammers take on the Gunners at the Emirates on Saturday but currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League.
It has been reported that the Israeli coach is already on borrowed time at Upton Park after a miserable start to his tenure, and things will not get any easier when they travel to North London.
Grant insists that he needs time to turn things around and says that the best managers, like Wenger, are in it for the long term.
"I speak with Arsene all the time, I've known him for more than 10 years and we have a good relationship," he said in The Sun.
"We more or less share the same idea. And most of his ideas we want to do.
"He has built a team through the academy into a top team, this would also be the vision at West Ham.
"When I came to English football, they gave me 10 days. They say I'm going because with me the team would go down but when you want to build something it takes time.
"I spoke with Arsene Wenger about this and I don't know a lot about his first year at Arsenal but it was not so easy.
"They won the double and then the league without defeat but when things didn't go well, like a year ago, he stuck to his way and this is the only way to get results."
Grant believes Wenger and Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson are examples of how long-term programmes work best.
He added: "Arsenal always have a lot of money to buy. Maybe not like Chelsea and others but they always have £15million and £10m to buy players.
"Every club is a little bit different and I think we need a long-term programme.
"Wenger and Alex Ferguson are good examples of this. Imagine they didn't let them continue after the first year, the whole history of the clubs are different.
"It won't come in one day and you can't push a button and everything comes good."

Rovers mourn Clayton

Former England and Blackburn Rovers captain Ronnie Clayton has died at the age of 76.
Rovers announced his death on Friday and the Premier League club are planning to pay their respects prior to Saturday's home match against Chelsea.
Blackburn chairman John Williams has led the tributes to Clayton, who spent his entire career at the club and won 35 caps for England between 1955 and 1960.
Williams said: "Everyone at Ewood Park is deeply saddened by the news.
"Ronnie was not only a wonderful servant and ambassador for the club, he was also one of the most popular men ever to be associated with Rovers.
"No-one had a bad word for Ronnie and he will be so very sadly missed. Our deepest sympathies go out to his dear wife Val and all his family at this saddest of times."
Clayton was a member of the 1958 World Cup squad, playing one match in the tournament.

Sidwell puts op on hold

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier has revealed that Steve Sidwell has postponed an Achilles operation ahead of Sunday's Second City derby.
Sidwell is set to play alongside Nigel Reo-Coker in the Villa midfield when the side lock horns with Birmingham City this weekend.
Houllier is short on numbers in the middle of the park with skipper Stiliyan Petrov out for up to three months with knee ligament damage and Fabian Delph still recovering from a similar setback.
"Steve's operation has been delayed because he and Nigel will be playing on a regular basis," said Houllier.
"He could have said 'okay, I'm having my operation and we will see after that'.
"He hasn't complained. Usually when you play, sometimes injuries disappear. I would say that is one of them.
"I know the strength of my squad. I would have preferred some of the players who are injured or suspended to be available - but we can cope."

Carr to be on best behaviour

Birmingham City captain Stephen Carr has promised to behave himself when his side meet Midlands rivals Aston Villa on Sunday.
Carr was given a one-match suspension by the Football Association following a hand gesture at Villa fans at the end of the corresponding fixture last season.
The right-back has no regrets over his actions but concedes he will strive to be on his best behaviour at Villa Park this weekend.
He said: "I'll be behaving myself this time. I'm not going through that again sitting in front of five men (FA disciplinary commission) talking to me like a child again.
"I'll be keeping my hands to myself.
"Do I regret now what I did? No, that's life. Do you know what I mean?
"At that time I was quite emotional. You shouldn't regret it, that's life. It's not good but you can't regret it.
"I went in front of the five men for the first time and hopefully it will be the last as well.
"I had to apologise basically. I didn't want to but there's not a lot you can do is there?"

McCarthy sets Kightly deadline

Mick McCarthy has told winger Michael Kightly that he has until the end of January to prove he can be a part of Wolves' plans this season after undergoing successful knee surgery.
Kightly's last appearance was against Birmingham at Molineux in November 2009, since which time he initially suffered an ankle setback and then encountered patella tendon problems.
The 24-year-old was not included in Wolves' 25-man squad named at the start of the season and he has three months to convince McCarthy he should be included for the second part of the campaign.
McCarthy said: "Kights has had his operation and is very positive about it.
"It was on one of his knees and he goes back to see the surgeon in six weeks' time.
"He's only had keyhole surgery which is not as intrusive. He's not out for the season, not at all, but he'll have to be fit for 31st January to get into the squad for us."
McCarthy added: "There's always the opportunity to go on loan somewhere else after that but I want him playing for me because he's a very good player."

Di Matteo eyeing entertainment

West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo is expecting an entertaining game against Blackpool on Monday, believing the Seasiders play some of the best football in the country.
The six-placed Baggies head to the coast for a clash with a Blackpool side who are confounding their critics.
Some pundits believed the Seasiders would struggle in the top flight but so far Ian Holloway's side have beaten Wigan, Newcastle and Liverpool to sit outside the relegation zone.
Holloway wants his side to score goals and Di Matteo is full of praise for their attacking philosophy.
The Baggies beat Blackpool 3-2 in both fixtures in the Championship last season and Di Matteo is expecting more of the same on Monday.
He said: "In my opinion they are the most attractive team in the Premier League after Arsenal and Chelsea.
"We had two games last season which were very entertaining and had plenty of goals, so I'm expecting a similar game.
"They haven't changed manager, neither have we, so it's going to be entertaining."
All three promoted teams currently sit outside of the drop zone, but Di Matteo sounded a word of caution to those who feel that this could be the first season since 2001/02 where all three sides that went up manage to avoid the drop.
He said: "The promoted teams, they need a good start to be able to have a chance.
"That's all it is. It's a long season, we all know that. At the moment, we are just trying to win as much as we can.
"The gap is still very big in the Premier League, especially between the top teams and the smaller clubs. It's massive, and seems to be increasing as well."
Ahead of the clash, West Brom are waiting on the fitness of Peter Odemwingie (knee), Jonas Olsson (Achilles) and Marc-Antoine Fortune (ankle), who all have a chance of playing but will be assessed at a later date.
"It's so-so at the moment, as there are a few players with knocks," Di Matteo added.
"We're hopeful that they'll all be fit, and there's a chance that we could have everybody available."
Di Matteo said that if any of his first-choice XI are not fit, he is confident in his squad of players, many of whom were involved in the 4-1 Carling Cup win at Leicester on Tuesday.
"I had confidence in them before that game as well," he said. "I was very pleased with the performance of the team and with some of the individual performances."

Mancini fires drink warning

Roberto Mancini has again hit out at British football's drinking culture after a video of some of his players on a night out appeared on the internet.
The Manchester City manager admitted earlier this month that he could not understand why players drink after a game, urging the men in his squad to always 'behave well' for the good of their careers.
However, reports have now emerged - accompanied by grainy footage - suggesting that City quartet Adam Johnson, Gareth Barry, Joe Hart and Shay Given were involved in late-night partying on a trip to Scotland earlier this week.
Mancini has refused to be drawn on whether he will be disciplining the four players, but has again made his displeasure clear.
"I have not seen this video but I told them my opinion about this situation 10 days ago," Mancini said.
"I don't understand this. The video was on Monday, and Monday was a day off. Some players can do what they want, but I don't understand why.
"I am unhappy about this, but for them. We play every three days and it is difficult to recover. I want to resolve this problem in the dressing room, not here (in a press conference)."
He added: "I think this problem is not only for us, it is for many players. For British players, it is part of the culture."
City take on Wolves at Molineux in the Premier League on Saturday as they look to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat at home to Arsenal.

Harry highlights Ronaldo sale

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp feels that Saturday's opponents Manchester United are weaker following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Portugal international Ronaldo left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in 2009 for a fee of £80million, having made a sensational impact at United.
This weekend Redknapp takes his troops to the Red Devils, who will of course be without Ronaldo and also the injured Wayne Rooney.
Nonetheless, Spurs boss Redknapp is expecting a stern test despite the absence of the world-class pair.
"They are still great, but they're not as good as they were when Ronaldo and Rooney were in the team," he said.
"Don't forget they went to Arsenal last year and ripped them to pieces, so they are still an incredible side.
"But there's a big difference when you have Ronaldo and Rooney.
He added: "We're getting better, we're closing the gap and we'll keep improving."

Nolan offers Hughton support

Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan insists under pressure boss Chris Hughton retains the full faith of the squad at St James' Park.
Hughton has found his position come under renewed scrutiny in recent days following the 4-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Carling Cup.
The club issued a statement on Hughton's future after the Arsenal defeat after feverish speculation suggested he was on his way out of the club.
Newcastle face bitter rivals Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby this Sunday, live on Sky Sports HD1 & 1, and it has been suggested a derby defeat could spell the end of Hughton's tenure on Tyneside.
However, Nolan is adamant whatever the result against Sunderland all the players want Hughton to stay on as manager as they feel they are going in the right direction under his stewardship.
"No matter what happens on Sunday we are going to still be 110 per cent behind Chris Hughton," Nolan told Sky Sports News.
"For the statements, for anything else we don't care what anyone else says outside. As a group of players, as a squad, as a staff and I believe as fans too we believe we are going in the right direction and the main focal point and the main leader in that is Chris Hughton.
"I think the talk is absolutely ridiculous on him having to win a game to stay in his job, it is absolutely ridiculous.
"No matter what we want to see Chris Hughton in charge of us and we believe we are going in the right way with him in charge of us."

Rafael committed to Spurs

Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart says he is hoping for a lengthy stay at White Hart Lane.
The Netherlands international, who arrived in north London from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, has proved himself as one of the signings of the summer, notching five goals for Spurs already this season.
Attacking midfielder Van der Vaart is keen to continue his good form at Tottenham, and feels silverware is not out of the question for Harry Redknapp's side.
"When you see the squad, nobody wants to leave and that's saying a lot about this club," Van der Vaart told the Daily Star.
"I want to stay at Tottenham. I'm here for the long run.
"I want to make this a really big club and I hope I can win something. I think it's possible - that's why I'm here."
Spurs, who made their UEFA Champions League debut this term, currently sit fifth in the Premier League standings after nine games.
And 27-year-old Van der Vaart insists a second consecutive top-four finish is on the cards this term.
"I have a lot of confidence that we are going to be in the Champions League again next season," he said.
"The pressure is really high, especially when you play in the Champions League and then a few days later in the league.
"It's really difficult to win every game, but I think until now we are doing a great job."
Van der Vaart also feels Spurs are close to becoming serious league title contenders, adding: "It's a little step but it's still a step. I think within a few years it's possible, because everything is possible."
Spurs travel to Manchester United on Saturday teatime unbeaten in three league games, and Van der Vaart is looking forward to taking on the top-flight giants.
"I love to play in big games," he added. "That's always a dream for a player to play a great match."

Wenger questions offside rule

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger acknowledges that the offside rule has become difficult to interpret but he thinks that English match officials are coping well.
Fifa's guidelines on the rules again came under the spotlight in midweek when the Gunners benefitted in their comfortable Carling Cup win over Newcastle.
A grey area was exposed when Theo Walcott was allowed to go on and score despite Nicklas Bendtner appearing to come from an offside position and block Mike Williamson.
Wenger has admitted that the offside rule is difficult to understand, however, he thinks that officials in England are doing their best to make the correct decisions.
"It was easier for the referee certainly, but I must say to their credit the linesmen have improved tremendously in England to judge the offside," said the Arsenal manager.
"I see many games in Europe and I think they get it right in England more than anywhere else."
Wenger continued: "It is very difficult to interpret because you are offside if one part of the body you can score with is offside and that's not always very easy to see.
"Sometimes it is the second part of the action, when the guy can take part of his initial offside position away and that looks a little unjust.
"The rule is you judge the situation when the ball is played so that means phase two is again phase one because you judge again when the ball is played - so phase two does basically not exist.
"That is why sometimes you can feel that a guy takes advantage of his offside position.
"The only thing sometimes I am not happy with is that if a guy who is central is 10 yards offside and he scores a goal from a first touch after a cross from the wing, you should maybe consider that is a bit unfair."

Moyes wants more from strikers

Everton manager David Moyes insists his strikers need to work harder to find the back of the net.
The Toffees currently sit 11th in the Premier League standings having won only two games this season, scoring just nine goals.
Hitmen Louis Saha, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Jermaine Beckford have yet to score in the league this campaign, with attacking midfielder Tim Cahill notching four of Everton's strikes.
Moyes has expressed his concern at the lack of goals from his strikers and has called on his front men to make more of an impact.
"You won't get the quota of goals you need if your strikers aren't scoring," Moyes said.
"Tim Cahill could be classed as a striker - a cross between an attacking midfielder and a forward.
"He's chipped in with some goals but we're not getting enough from other areas. It's a concern because you can't go through a season with your strikers not scoring."
The manager has been dealt a fitness blow ahead of Saturday's trip to Stoke with the news French international Saha is struggling with a thigh injury.
Saha scored 15 times last season, but has managed just one league start this term due to injury and fitness problems.
Moyes says the striker, who missed training at the start of the week following a family bereavement, is not match fit, but admits he may have to risk him against the Potters.
"He had a family bereavement at the start of the week and so he didn't train because he had to be away for a few days," said Moyes.
"He has since come back and trained a couple of days. He's feeling his thigh as well now, so I don't think he's fully fit."
The Toffees will follow up their trip to the Britannia Stadium with games against Blackpool and Bolton, and Moyes is hoping to use those matches to compensate for his side's lacklustre start to the campaign.
He added: "If we want to get back to the way I feel we should be, we need a couple of results from the next two or three games."
