None of the traditional 'big four' managed a victory last weekend with Arsenal slipping up at home to West Brom, Chelsea losing at Manchester City, Manchester United drawing at Bolton and Sunderland holding Liverpool to a draw at Anfield.
Ricketts believes these results breathed new life into the top-flight and makes it more exciting.
He said: "Last weekend did the league good.
"Those results have opened it up. It is not just the dominant four winning every week.
"You have five or six teams trying to get into the top four and sides like ourselves are giving the bigger teams a better test than what we have done before.
"You would never have said West Brom would beat Arsenal. With both sides playing football you would think there could only be one outcome.
"But that is what makes the league so exciting."
While Bolton have adopted a more flowing style of football under Owen Coyle, Ricketts insists it is still a results business.
"I can't say I am too fussed about whether we get any more credit or not," said the Wales international.
"Maybe the way we are playing is more pleasing on the eye but we just want to get results."
With Gary Cahill suspended, Ricketts was outstanding alongside Zat Knight in the centre of defence for Bolton against the Red Devils.
Normally a full-back, he has enjoyed playing in the centre, as well as the different challenge it brings.
He added: "I played in the centre a couple of times at youth level and when I was with Telford in the Conference.
"I like it. Naturally I am a defensive-minded player so it suits me well.
"It is a different challenge and more of a mind game against your opponent than it tends to be at full-back."
