Roberto Martínez has called on the Premier League to revisit the debate on whether to close the summer transfer window before the season starts, claiming that the current practice is unfair on players and devalues the league.
Martínez was speaking with reference to Charles N’Zogbia, who almost completed a move to Birmingham City in the summer. The deal collapsed after the winger disgusted Birmingham by raising his wage demands at the last minute, supplying the St Andrew’s crowd with plenty of ammunition to launch at him all afternoon.
Rather than concede that the player had brought it upon himself, Martínez has argued that the transfer window is to blame, and that N’Zogbia is a victim of having to make a life-altering decision while being distracted by competitive football.
He said: “They are human beings. They have the right to think about their futures and think about their families, but it is wrong to do that when the competition is going on. Charles has been a victim of that. It is unfair on the human side of football.”
Although Wigan have conceded a remarkable 13 goals in four home games this season, their defences are yet to be breached on the road. Of course, how much of that is down to the fact that they have only played away twice, or whether it is solid defending or plain good fortune that is to thank, are other matters entirely.
On this evidence we can discount the defending angle. Birmingham had enough chances — two good ones for Cameron Jerome — to win the match and commemorate having gone a year without losing a league match at St Andrew’s with a little more style.
