England international Rooney is at the centre of a sensational transfer saga after it emerged on Tuesday that he wanted to leave Old Trafford.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that his star asset has made it clear that he has no intention of agreeing a new contract with last season's Premier League runners-up.
Arch-rivals Manchester City and Chelsea have been linked with Rooney as a result, while Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he would like to sign the multi-talented forward, who turns 25 on Sunday.
Defending Spanish champions Barcelona are also thought to be considering a £25million bid in the January transfer window and Guardiola is an admirer of Rooney.
"He is one of the greatest players in the world as there are very few players with his qualities," the Barcelona boss is quoted as saying in The Sun.
"He's a player I admire very much."
Reports suggest that Barcelona would not be prepared to pay any more than £25m for Rooney, whose current United contract expires in the summer of 2012.
United's bitter foes, City, would be able to better that offer if it comes down to a bidding war and the Eastlands outfit could also meet speculated wage demands of £150,000 a week after tax.
Rooney will not play in Wednesday night's UEFA Champions League match against Bursaspor as Ferguson has said that the former Everton player has an ankle injury.
