England striker Rooney issued a statement on Wednesday explaining the reason he wanted to leave Old Trafford was down to the club's lack of impact in the transfer market.
United manager Ferguson, who spoke frankly of his shock at the player's decision earlier this week, is keen to settle the issue.
The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season and the Red Devils will not want to see a player of his value leave for nothing.
"I haven't read the whole (Rooney) statement. We will consider it all," said Ferguson following his side's 1-0 win over Bursaspor in the UEFA Champions League.
"David Gill and I have a meeting at 10 tomorrow morning. David has spoken to the owners tonight which is important. What is really important is for us to put it to bed, we don't want it to become a saga.
"Sunday's game against Stoke is the most important thing. This is a bagatelle, believe me."
Ferguson insists Rooney is making the wrong choice in departing United and reiterated his point by comparing insisting that the grass is not always greener elsewhere.
"Sometimes you look in a field and you see a cow and you think it's a better cow than the one you've got in the field," said Ferguson.
"It's a fact, right, and it never really works out that way. It's probably the same cow and it's not as good as your own cow. Some players like to think there's a better world somewhere else. It never really works."
In his statement, Rooney said: "It is absolutely true that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract.
"During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world.
"For me it's all about winning trophies - as the club has always done under Sir Alex. Because of that I think the questions I was asking were justified.
"I met with David Gill last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad.
"I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract."
Ferguson's frustration was clear after last night's match at Old Trafford as he added: "I am manager of a club that is trying to win a game on Sunday against Stoke City. That is the most important thing. The rest is a bagatelle."
