Kolo Toure and Vincent Kompany have formed a formidable partnership in the centre of defence this season, with the likes of Pablo Zabaleta, Micah Richards and Dedryck Boyata contributing to a start that has seen City concede just two goals in their first six Premier League games.
The fourth-placed Blues have scored just seven, though - nine less than Manchester United and Arsenal, and 14 less than pacesetters Chelsea.
City ended Chelsea's 100% start with a 1-0 win over the defending champions at Eastlands on Saturday before drawing 1-1 with Juventus in the Europa League in midweek.
But Mancini reckons there will soon be more goals flying in with a solid foundation being built at the back.
"Vincent compares with anyone - and he is still only 24," he said on man-of-the-moment Kompany.
"He can also play in the midfield but for now he is doing very well as a defender.
"I saw him when he was 18 and was playing for Anderlecht against Inter Milan in the Champions League.
"He was very young but he had good technical ability and a great attitude. He has improved since then and can get even better.
"We have worked very well in the defensive phase, now we must improve on the offensive side so we score more than one goal a game," Mancini added.
"But I believe we only have this problem because all our strikers are injured. When Emmanuel Adebayor recovers 100% fitness and Mario Balotelli is back, I am confident we can change this situation."
As well as beating Chelsea, City enjoyed a 3-0 win over Liverpool, but they then lost 1-0 at Sunderland.
Newcastle visit Eastlands on Sunday while City soon face West Brom and Mancini has told his players they cannot afford just to turn it on against the big-boys.
"We must beat teams like Newcastle and West Brom," he said.
"We can't allow ourselves just to think we can beat Chelsea and Liverpool.
"If we want to go higher up the table we must beat other teams as well."
