The star striker limped out of training on Friday and will now undergo surgery on Monday.
The new Villa boss hopes the 23-year-old will be available for the home clash with Chelsea on 16th October, but if not, he should return against Sunderland the following weekend.
But he will not be available for England's crucial Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on 12th October.
Houllier told the club's official website: "Gabby is not available (to face Spurs).
"He will have a minor operation on Monday evening.
"He could be available for the Chelsea game but, if not, then definitely for the Sunderland match.
"He is definitely ruled out. He left training this morning and just thought it was too painful.
"He won't be able to play. It's not just a niggle, it's really painful.
"Hopefully, the operation will heal that."
