The Black Cats left-back has been sidelined since last month's Carling Cup defeat by West Ham with a hamstring injury, forcing the former England international to miss four games.
Richardson suffered a slight setback last week but manager Steve Bruce has confirmed the 26-year-old was back in training on Tuesday.
Should the ex-Manchester United man be passed fit for the trip to St James' Park then Bruce would be faced with a selection dilemma as new Scotland international Phil Bardsley has helped the Black Cats keep three straight clean sheets in Richardson's absence.
Midfielder Andy Reid is also back in contention after overcoming a knock so Bruce's only remaining injury absentees are long-term victim Fraizer Campbell (knee), young goalkeeper Trevor Carson (shoulder) and 19-year-old striker Ryan Noble, who has returned from a loan spell at Derby for treatment on a back problem.
