Newcastle are now 7/1 to be relegated this season, while Sunderland are 8/1. Bet now.
Chris Hughton preferred to focus on a great win for Newcastle rather than his personal future following the victory over Sunderland.
The Magpies produced a magnificent performance to beat their local rivals 5-1, with Kevin Nolan netting a hat-trick and Shola Ameobi scoring twice.
There had been speculation during the week that Hughton could be set to lose his job, although the club later stated that talks over a new deal would begin soon.
The result against Sunderland could therefore prove to be significant for the manager, who was supported by both his players and the crowd at St James' Park.
However, Hughton brushed off questions about his own position, telling Sky Sports: "When you see the stadium we have and the support we have, to see the reaction from them is what the game is all about.
"We knew what game it was and what it meant to them.
"(The fans' support) means a lot but for me it's never been the most important thing. The most important thing is seeing this group doing well.
"We had a wonderful season last season and there is no doubt that this group of players want to do well for the football club.
"They are a spirited group and this has been a good day. A tough week but a very, very good day, and we will make the most of it."
It is the intention of club bosses to open talks over a new deal with Hughton at the end of the year and he maintains that he will not be asking to bring those discussions forward to clear up any uncertainty.
"All of those decisions will be made by the club," he explained.
"It is their decision on the timing of contract talks or my situation, but on a day like today those things go out of the window."
