It was confirmed on Thursday that the Red Devils had opened discussions with the Danish goalkeeper's current employers Aalesund, with Sir Alex Ferguson keen to bring him to Old Trafford.
Reports later suggested that an agreement had been struck between the two clubs, with a few loose ends all that needed to be tied up.
However, a member of the delegation sent to England by Aalesund to thrash out a deal insists nothing has been put in place.
"Nothing is signed and we are flying home," said the club's sporting director Henrik Hoff.
Asked what that meant for the proposed deal, he added: "It means that we are still in negotiations. I can't say more than that."
Aalesund remain confident an agreement will be reached and even went as far as confirming the deal in error on Thursday, with a couple of blank spaces left in which to input the relevant length of the contract.
A statement released prematurely on their official website read: "AaFK and Manchester United have agreed on a transfer of Anders Lindegaard.
"The deal was just signed and a dream has come true for the Danish goalkeeper. He will be representing the Red Devils from ___ and the contract lasts until ___.
"We wish Anders all the best in Manchester and wish to thank him for his great efforts."
