The Blues were able to consolidate their standing inside the top four on Wednesday as they took a point off arch-rivals Manchester United.
A bore draw at Eastlands did little to promote the title credentials of either side, with the desire to avoid defeat on derby day outweighing the ambition to snatch a winner.
City's performance in that contest has drawn the wider criticism, with Mancini accused of stifling the game with negative tactics.
The Italian insists he played the game as he saw it, with it imperative that the Blues did not come unstuck on home soil.
He also insists that talk of a title push is premature, with City still very much a work in progress.
With that in mind, he claims qualification for the UEFA Champions League is his sole target this season, and he is currently on course to achieve that goal.
"If the Premier League finished tomorrow, I am happy," said Mancini.
"Our target is to get to the Champions League.
"But the season is very long. It is important for us to stay near the top and we can change our target."
