The Frenchman, who succeeded Martin O'Neill at the Villa Park helm, has overseen a mixed start to his reign.
In his five games so far, Villa have won one, drawn two and lost two, leaving them 14th in the Premier League.
Petrov, who is currently sidelined with a knee problem, understands that fans demand results but has urged them to be patient as the new management team find their feet.
"The team have been working really hard under the new manager and we have been playing well recently," the Bulgarian midfielder said in the Birmingham Post.
"We've been creating a lot of chances too so hopefully we can start putting a few more of them away.
"But it will take time and that is something that every team needs under a new manager. I have confidence in the boys to go out there and perform to the best of their ability."
Petrov has also confirmed that he expects to be out of action until February, having picked up an injury in Villa's 1-0 defeat at Sunderland on 23rd October.
"I feel okay but the knee injury I picked up against Sunderland means I will be out for around three months," he added.
"It was one of those things and you have just got to accept that sometimes these things happen in football.
"It is the first time I have been out for such a lengthy period since I suffered a broken leg when playing for Celtic ten years ago."
