Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier unsuccessfully asked the French Football Federation to keep his former job open for him, according to FFF president Fernand Duchaussoy.
The recently appointed Villa boss worked as technical director for the FFF before being named as Martin O'Neill's replacement this month.
Frenchman Houllier, who only penned a three-year contract at the Midlands outfit on Friday despite agreeing to take the reins a fortnight ago, has caused outrage back in his native land by requesting to be given a sabbatical year.
However, the 63-year-old former Liverpool tactician has been told by the FFF that his demands have been rejected.
President Duchaussoy told the Sunday Mirror: "Our federal council has rejected Gerard Houllier's request for sabbatical leave. If they refuse it's difficult for him to do anything but resign.
"Some council members thought his request ?particularly impudent. ?Although he made it within the context of employment laws, it surprised me."
