Bruce rues missed chances

Steve Bruce was left to lament Sunderland's 'Achilles heel' following the goalless draw with Manchester United.

The Black Cats carved out several chances against the title hopefuls but could not find a breakthrough and had to settle for a point.

Darren Bent has regularly provided the inspiration for Sunderland since his arrival in the summer of 2009 but the opportunities fell elsewhere on Saturday and Bruce admits that others must chip in with goals.

He was nevertheless pleased with the performance, telling Sky Sports: "I am delighted with the way we have played.

"We couldn't have wished for a more difficult run of games and the eight points we have achieved has been hard work.

"It is maybe our Achilles heel that we rely too much on Benty, and today we needed someone else to come to the party."

Steed Malbranque squandered the best opening when he shot straight at Edwin van der Sar from close range, although Bruce offered an explanation as to why the midfielder might not have done better.

"I think he thought he was offside, so he is gutted in there (the dressing room)," said Bruce.

"I'm disappointed he didn't take it but overall his performance over the past few weeks has been terrific."

The result left Sunderland in mid-table but, having already played United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, Bruce is now looking to climb the table after the international break.

Consistency has proved elusive since Bruce took charge but he has been encouraged by the team's recent form.

"The one thing I am not going to do is get carried away. We have performed well but now we have to go and beat the teams that are around us," he urged.

"We have eight points and I am delighted heading into the break that against the big teams we have done well."
