The Baggies found themselves behind in the second half when Trotters frontman Johan Elmander broke through the defence to fire past Scott Carson.
Before the break the hosts had several chances to go ahead with Chris Brunt forcing a couple of saves from Jussi Jaaskelainen and Peter Odemwingie looking dangerous and seeing a decent header sail over the bar.
However, following Bolton's opener, James Morrison levelled after an Odemwingie cross in the 78th minute to make it 1-1 - a result which pleased the home side's boss.
"I think the second-half made up for the first-half. It was a very entertaining game in the second-half and ultimately I think it's a fair result. They could have won the game, we could have won it, both teams had chances and I think we'll take the point," he told Sky Sports.
"It is a great result for us, Bolton are a very good side, a very good team, difficult to beat.
"They got the draw against Manchester United last week and they're very good, so it was difficult for us today."
Bolton boss Owen Coyle slammed the decision to not rule out West Brom's equaliser because he felt Odemwingie came back from an offside position before he collected the ball and crossed for Morrison.
However, when Di Matteo was asked about the goal, the Italian replied: "I haven't watched it again so I couldn't comment on it."
West Brom, hotly tipped to go straight back down into the Championship, remain in the top-half of the table following the draw with Bolton.
"We want to be competitive and I think we had a decent start into the Barclays Premier League," he added.
"We're just going to keep going and trying our best to get results for the club."
