Premier League round-up

Manchester United were frustrated on their travels once again at Sunderland, Tottenham hit back to beat Aston Villa and Everton secured their first victory of the season to end Birmingham's proud home record.

Wigan claimed their first home win of the campaign against 10-man Wolves, Stoke's recent resurgence continued against Blackburn, West Ham and Fulham shared the spoils in their London derby and West Brom drew at home to Bolton.

Manchester United were held to a fourth successive away draw in the Premier League as they missed the chance to move level on points with leaders Chelsea following a 0-0 draw at Sunderland.

Kick-off at the Stadium of Light was delayed by 20 minutes by a burst pipe in the visitors' dressing room and when the match got under way it was the Black Cats who had the better chances with Steed Malbranque going close and Bolo Zenden striking the post.

Dimitar Berbatov stepped off the bench to replace Michael Owen at the interval and had the ball in the net, only for his effort to be correctly ruled out for offside, with Steve Bruce's men claiming another impressive result after beating Manchester City and drawing with Arsenal and Liverpool.

Rafael van der Vaart is beginning to look like one of Harry Redknapp's best buys after the £8million summer signing from Real Madrid helped Tottenham come from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

Sebastien Bassong's defensive dalliance allowed Emile Heskey to steal possession before the revitalised striker put the ball on a plate for Marc Albrighton to open the scoring at the far post in the 16th minute.

But Spurs were level when Peter Crouch headed Roman Pavlyuchenko's cross back into the box and Van der Vaart was on hand to nod home, before Lennon provided a second-half ball to Crouch, with the England international again setting up the Dutchman.

Everton claimed their first win of the season and ended Birmingham's 18-game unbeaten home Premier League record with Tim Cahill's late header from Leighton Baines' cross sealing a 2-0 success at St Andrews.

Roger Johnson's own goal gifted Everton the lead at the start of the second period as the defender diverted the ball into his own net as he attempted to cut out Leon Osman's low cross, unaware that goalkeeper Ben Foster was already in position behind him to gather.

Jordi Gomez fired Wigan out of the relegation zone and briefly into the top half of the table with a glorious free-kick in the 2-0 victory over 10-man Wolves at the DW Stadium.

Mick McCarthy's side saw their numbers reduced with only 11 minutes on the clock when a spectacularly late and rash challenge from Karl Henry sent Gomez cartwheeling into the air.

The Spanish midfielder broke the deadlock with a stunning strike in the 65th minute which gave Marcus Hahnemann no chance before Christophe Berra's last-ditch tackle late in the game only succeeded in playing the ball against Hugo Rodallega to seal a first home win of the season for the Latics.

Jon Walters ensured Stoke's impressive recent run continued as he scored the only goal of the game against Blackburn, the club where he started his career.

Walters netted for the first time in the Premier League early in the second half to give Stoke the points at the Britannia Stadium, latching onto Matt Etherington's precise pass from Kenwyne Jones' flick.

Clint Dempsey returned to haunt Rob Green once again with the USA international striker on target for Fulham in their 1-1 draw at West Ham.

Dempsey, whose now infamous daisy-cutter somehow beat Green in the World Cup, gave the Hammers No.1 no chance with an athletic volley from inside the box to open the scoring in the 33rd minute at Upton Park.

Avram Grant's men were level early in the second period when Brede Hangeland's awful ball out of defence gave away possession before Victor Obinna crossed for an unmarked Frederic Piquionne to head home.

James Morrison rescued a point for West Brom as his header 12 minutes from time following Peter Odemwingie's great cross ensured the Baggies' clash with Bolton ended 1-1.

Johan Elmander earlier continued his solid recent form with his fourth goal of the season to open the scoring in the 64th minute, collecting Kevin Davies' neat pass and beating Scott Carson from inside the box.
