Wednesday's derby date at Eastlands was billed as a possible changing of the guard, with City now harbouring ambitions on a par with their neighbours.
However, a disappointing contest ended goalless, with neither side really threatening to take the spoils.
Mancini's ambition in the crunch clash was questioned the moment the teams were announced, with skipper Carlos Tevez deployed as a lone frontman.
The Italian claims it was never his intention to kill the game, though, with enough attacking talent on display to offer a considerable threat.
"When you play against United you can easily lose because if you give them a chance to score, they will score," Mancini told Sky Sports.
"I wanted to win this game, but sometimes it is better to draw than to lose like last year. We played to win this game."
In the corresponding fixture last season, Paul Scholes nodded a late winner for United to steal the points.
Mancini believes his side have improved since then and feels there is no shame in being held 0-0 on home soil by a side of United's undoubted quality.
"I think it was a difficult game for both teams. I think the result is correct," he said.
"But we have improved from last year, when we conceded a goal in the last minute."
