It says much about the game that United's commanding centre-half was named Man of the Match, with defences dominating throughout.
City rarely troubled Edwin van der Sar over the course of the 90 minutes, with the Red Devils able to keep their 'noisy neighbours' relatively quiet.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side offered little attacking threat of their own, though, and the contest fell some way short of its elaborate pre-match billing.
Vidic admits that it can be difficult in such important games to shake off the shackles, with losing never an option against local rivals.
With that in mind, he was happy to have taken a point off City and feels United can take some positives from their lacklustre showing.
"I think today was a real derby game," Vidic told Sky Sports.
"We saw today two teams who were defending very well and I think today was a fair result.
"There was a big pressure definitely, for City to win and for us this is always a difficult place to come.
"We came here to win the game but City were good today, they played strong and we didn't have too many chances. At times in the game we played some good football but we didn't create many chances."
