James Collins looks likely to be partnered by Carlos Cuellar in the centre of defence for Wednesday night's Carling Cup clash.
The repeat of last season's semi-final against Blackburn will see Dunne sit out the match with a knee problem so Collins and Cuellar will get the nod.
Collins is hoping for a less traumatic time than the 6-4 win in last year's semi final but he is looking to return to Wembley for the second year running with a better outcome this time around.
He told the Birmingham Mail: "Every competition you go into you want to do the best you can.
"We had a great time in the Carling Cup last year, getting to the final was great, the only disappointing thing was the result on the day.
"The lead-up to the game and even the semi-finals was great. We'll be aiming to do that again.
"In years gone by it was as if the Carling Cup was frowned upon by bigger teams, but you can see from the teams they're putting out that everyone's taking it more seriously again.
"It's always exciting when a new manager comes in. You've got to prove yourself again to new staff and raise your game, so I'm sure all the boys are thinking the same."
