PL denies Attwell dropping

The Premier League has insisted that referee Stuart Attwell has not been dropped for this weekend's action following Saturday's controversial match at Anfield.

Attwell has been named fourth official for Tottenham's clash with Aston Villa at White Hart Lane this weekend fuelling suggestions he has been dropped following the controversy surrounding Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Sunderland.

The official came under fire from Sunderland boss Steve Bruce for allowing Liverpool's bizarre opening goal against Sunderland at Anfield to stand.

Attwell was also criticised by Bruce for not sending off Steven Gerrard for a challenge on Danny Welbeck with the Liverpool skipper escaping with a yellow card.

A Premier League spokesman said: "He has not been dropped - he was always scheduled to be fourth official for the Tottenham match."
