The Midlanders suffered their fourth straight defeat in the Premier League as Luke Varney and Marlon Harewood scored the goals to put the visitors to the sword.
Varney's majestic third-minute strike gave Ian Holloway's Seasiders the lead, the third successive time Wolves had conceded within the first five minutes.
And McCarthy has warned his players that statistic must change if they are to get themselves out of the relegation zone.
The Wanderers chief told Sky Sports: "It's not getting any easier to come in and talk about our performances. We're just playing catch-up all the time.
"There's no point having performances when you're one down. We need a solid base, which is a clean sheet.
"It's a wonder-strike but it's poor defending on our part and it just changes the whole complexion of the game."
Holloway said in his post-match interview that Wolves were the dominant team, especially in the opening period.
But McCarthy took no solace out of that and told his players they must improve for when they host the manager's former club, Sunderland, next weekend.
When asked if he took comfort in playing well, he added: Yeah great isn't it - you dominate the game but you get beat. I'm getting tired of that and I'm sure everyone else is getting tired of it.
"We've got to be better in both boxes and we can't afford to give the goals away that we're giving away."
